I was baking two cakes for my little cousins this weekend and needed a few things. I went to my local party supply store and got my cake boards and finally decided to get the wilton gumpaste tools. While I am checking out and spending like $40.00 on cake tools the owner and I get to talking about my cakes.

I tell her I don't sell them because its illegal where we live. I show her my Saints helmet cake, and she freaks out that she has to have it (for Superbowl Sunday). She says like 3 times "I'll pay anything for it, please". Then she says "Even like 50 bucks".

I just laughed and said I can't sell them plus I'm pretty busy this week.

I know I am not a pro and the cake isn't perfect, but if I were going to sell it, it really wouldn't be for $50.00. People kill me.
Here's the cake.

You missed a great opportunity to inform a cake cilvian just what a *custom!* designed cake like that would cost.
I'd have laughed and told her is would be AT LEAST 3 (4?) TIMES THAT MUCH.

Thank you. I know she is the one who buys all the caking stuff and charges so much more than any other store. You would think she would know a little something about the time and work put into them. $50.00, I still chuckle when I think about it.

she knows i have no doubt about that.

you are a far better woman than i would have probably had some smart butt comment for her.

i would never insult an artist by a comment like that. and folks, what we all do, and try to do is art.

I so know she knew what a cake like that cost. I mean seriously she in the cake business (in a different way I know) but reguardless I would of at least told her something like "oh Im sorry 50 dollars doesn't even cover half of my material needed" But I would say "thank you for the interest"

Nice cake though really !!

Geez! I'd hate to see what she'd offer if she wouldn't "pay anything for it"!! What a S'moron (a little treat humor! haha)

PS: That is a GREAT cake!!

I had a similar experience about a year ago.

I arrived at a party with a fondant-covered "Santa bag" with about six handmade toys spilling out of the top of the bag. Someone wanted me to make one for her - and she was THRILLED to "offer" me $40 for it! She's a sweet lady. A bit clueless, but sweet nonetheless.

BTW - love your helmet - it's fantastic!

She wanted to pay $50 for the picture of the cake, right? icon_wink.gificon_lol.gificon_wink.gif

Giving her the benefit of the doubt, it's possible she doesn't know. The owner of the party stuff store nearest to my house doesn't know anything about cake. She carries boards and pillars and some pans because people want her to, but she thinks an expensive cake is one that costs $20 at the grocery store.
