I don't work harder than people who bake from mixes, but I do have a different skill set. Just like I have a different skill set from someone who is a professional drummer (and you don't want to hear me play drums, I think.)
EXACTLY!!
Why is it so hard for people....especially women to just say "Hey, good for you" Did you ever notice that most women will not pay another women a complement whether it be about a skill or their hair or clothes?
Why is that I wonder?
I have a sister who is a wonderful seamstress....she sketches, she cuts and voila a masterpiece. She goes to NY twice a year with her sketch pad and sketches the newest fashions and comes home and copies them for her and her children.
I can hem a pair of pants and that's about it. I'm proud of her talent and skill and I'm not too proud to tell her that.
Scratch bakers are not "snobs", my sister the seamstress is not a "snob" people who can ski are not "snobs".....there are many skills that people have that I don't......it doesn't make them better then me just different.
I've never seen anything quite like what I witness on this site whenever this subject comes up. The "claws" come out and it's us against them....how stupid.
My strongest selling point is the fact that I bake from scratch...why? Because, nobody in my area does....I can market myself as a scratch baker and the competition can't.
Does that make me the bad guy/gal?
Oh man....
Have any of y'all seen that Saturday Night Live skit with Justin Timberlake singing about a "(Gift) in a Box"? I have that stuck in my head, but it's now become "Cake From a Box".
Or maybe that old guy from American Idol the other week! "Cake from a box! Cake from a box! Goin' round town sellin cake from a box!"
(...I am so not right in the head this week...)
OMG HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
I agree with the skill set comment. It is a completely different skill set between mixin' and scratchin'.

Nope it doesn't and for the record I always give women (and men) compliments! I was raised by a mom and dad who always compliment/ed people. Men and women...haha I remember when my mom at about 60 years old went to her "new" doc (she's passed now) and complimented him on his hair (he had nice hair) and then he said something like "like you're flirting with me"...haha..THEN my mom was taken aback...I had to laugh but then she learned his sense of humor (my mom had great qualities but not much sense of humor which actually gave us kids lots of laughs at her expense)...anyway I guess they raised some secure kids because I can go somewhere, no make up dressed like a slob and see someone dressed or wearing something nice and I have NO problems telling them how nice they look/smell, etc......Oh my dad came home one day from HIS doc appt telling me how lovely the receptionist looked that day and said he told her so too (not in a creepy old man way but a grandfatherly type) and guess who NOW gets preferential treatment when he calls...lol...but he didn't do it for that reason..he's not like that...More people should learn how to give compliments and be less competitive...OK I'm off to shop for cake toys...looooove buying me some cake toys!

Ha ha, it makes you a big meany pants cake snob!
OH I have to add one thing...About 4 years ago when my mom was in her 70s we drove up at a stop light beside a BIG SUV and this black guy (just setting the scene) with these BIG flashy rims...his wondow was down and my mom looked over and said "Sir you have some really pretty hubcaps"....hehe he grinned and said "thank you ma'am"...lol...they were nice...probably cost more than the SUV....OK I'm gone now...sorry off topic..

That's too funny! Pretty hubcaps...

Wow, your parents sound like wonderful people and you're very fortunate.
I was raised by the same sort of parents.....I was blessed too.
But, as a hairstylist I see this every day in my shop. VERY few women will pay a complement to another woman.
Just today I had a lady sit in my chair and say "I want the exact color as so and so she looks so awesome" and my first thought was....really? she was just sitting in this same chair right before you.....why didn't you tell her how beautiful she looked?
It's definitely a sign of insecurity and I'm sure their upbringing or society is somewhat to blame.
I don't know maybe because my main business is the beauty industry I see it from a different perspective. A complement goes a long way, it's too bad so many are afraid to offer one now and then.
I guess I understand that scratch is not using a box mix but how about all the work that went into getting you the eggs, milk, flour, etc. ......its not like alot of scratch bakes raise their own chickens,cows,etc.........I really don't get this whole argument. I raise my own chickens, does that make my cake better then yours because the eggs are fresh right from the barn. I don't think so.

We're all adults and I'm pretty sure we all know the difference between starting a cake with a cake mix or not.
I've always wondered what the real, solid definition of "From Scratch" means...there are a million and one ways to split that hair.
Can't rely on the dictionary, even they can't agree on what it means!! Merriam-Webster even flip-flops on the meaning. One version lists "assembly from the start; from the very beginning" as From Scratch, so by definition all the bakers on here DO bake from scratch. But another version lists "without using a prepared mixture of ingredients ", which means that a box user can't claim they make from scratch. And yet, that second definition could be interpreted as to implying that nothing else would have been added.
Just like "Homemade" vs "From the Store". Don't we all get our stuff from the store? So does that mean if you make your own spaghetti sauce you can't call it homemade because you bought the ingredients at a grocery? If the mushrooms are pre-sliced and in a package, does that negate your sauce from being "homemade from scratch"? If you use, say, strawberry preserves in a scratch cake, does that negate being able to call it "from scratch" too? It's a prepared product...
Where is the line in the sand drawn?
(I'm just thinking out loud now...brain is in full on Overthink thanks to this, and I'm trying to steer this towards actual logical discussion rather than pointless flamebaiting)

I frequently stop beautiful women in the grocery, on the street, wherever, and tell them, "I used to be a talent scout for a modeling agency. If I still had that job, I'd be asking you to come in to talk to us!" I then tell them if they haven't considered it, they should.
My favorite was when I stopped the car in the parking lot and called a mom over and said, "Ma'am, is this your daughter?" By the look on her face, she was suddenly apprehensive about what the problem might be! When I told her that her daughter should consider modeling, she said, "I keep telling her that!" then turned to her daughter and said, "See!? This woman is a professional and knows what she's talking about! Now maybe you won't think it's just your mom saying that!"
In general, it's really fun to add such a compliment to women and young girls' day! I'm glad I had that job so I know what to look for in modeling potential!

Maybe it does, you can definitely taste the difference when you eat fruit picked straight from the vine, so why not eggs picked straight from the chicken
And by the way, I was wondering when the "mill your own grain" thing was going to start up!
I made my babies from scratch, and yes they are way better then those darn box babies

yeah... you can totally taste the difference between box mix babies an scratch babies... *narf*
I was wondering when the whole in order to make things from scratch you must first create the universe BS would pop up too.

That sounds like a fun job Debi...man you're multi-talented girl!
A complement from a complete stranger could make someone's not so great day a better one for sure.

Grabbing at straws now Jeanne....right on schedule too!

Can you see it now? "Help wanted. Test tube babies need not apply. We want "real" people working for us!"
Thats ok, they can churn their butter for ten minutes, hahaha I will take that time and hang out with my grand children and everyone loved my cakes, so really I don't care. Its just one more thing to let some people get smart all over the place, so whatever!
i'm still confused...i don't get it. what are ya'll talking about
Ginni, stick around awhile. Most threads take a turn off topic. It's allllll good.

believe me...i don't mind at all that it went off topic.. i just can't figure out...are you talking about babies made of cake, or real babies, or are you still talking about mix vs. scratch or what?
Yep--I do make butter sometimes. Not for baking, but for home use. Kinda interesting. Anyways, scratch baking/cooking....it's an art that is appreciated by those with the patience and skill.

Well thanks Debi!!! Yea I know, and when people go to see movies, so one says " oh hes such a great actor" and his friend says "yea but hes not made from scratch!"
Ginni, we are just having some fun!
LOL.. I do too Jamie (with the butter). It's fun to do with the kids. Shake-a shake-a shake-a...
And making bread... also fun to do with the kids... cooking/baking is a wonderful way to send some quality time with the family.
Ginni... it was just a funny.
Honestly... I'd love to do it all from start to finish. We used to have chickens a long while back... the best eggs ever! But if I did it all... no one could afford the cakes.
Well, I am SUPER offended by the test tube babies talk! I had to have fertility treatments, so I am offended! (not really)
I tell my kids that their father wasn't in the room when they were conceived, but I was thinking about him And they Loooooove that, since they're at the age where the thought of anything related to conception is super embarrassing.
