My sister has a co-worker who is planning an October Wedding. The Bride states between the two families, the plans are to invite 700 guests.

The bride is trying to save money by limiting the budget for the cake. She really wants a yellow cake covered with chocolate frosting. She only wants to pay $1.50 per slice. Can this be done?

Need some ideals as the best way she can pull this one off. icon_confused.gif The bride is really convinced that she can find a cake for $300.00 total. TIA

So she only wants to spend $1.50 per serving - and is limiting her cake to 200 servings for 700 guests because her cake budget is $300.00?

Think she needs a reality check...

Does she know she can save all that money by making her own wedding cake:

Agreed that the only way she can do this is to buy a small cake and not provide a serving per guest. Realistically she is looking at a slice per table... better get a lot of forks.

My suggestion would be to cut the guest list - seriously 700??

yeah something is wrong with her math. 700 servings x $1.50 = $1050.

But here's what pisses me off. She's planning a big 'ole PARTY for 700 of her "closest and dearest" friends ..... and she wants to pay $300 for cake.

Tell Miss Tight A$$ that for 43 cents a serving, she'll be lucky to get day old Twinkies.

And she better get a reality check REAL fast or her Bridezilla gene is going to surface and it will be everyone else's fault that she can't have a "nice" wedding.

Sorry, but in my old age, I just have zero tolerance for crap like this anymore.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhaha - that's what I'd say in response to her request! Debi's right, bride can't do maths to save her life.

Even a super cheap grocery store is not going to give her a wedding cake for less than 50 cents a serving!

Can't honestly believe you thought somebody here would be able to give you a solution for THAT budget icon_wink.gif

700 people? Why do people ON BUDGETS always want the most number of guests? Don' they know the easiest way to cut your budget is to limit your guests!!

I'd go back to her with a couple of POSSIBLE scenarios!!

MY SOLUTION .... use her 300 bucks to make a giant ALL-DAY SUCKER - it can get passed around and everybody gets to have a LICK!! icon_razz.gificon_biggrin.gif

cause she is most certainly making a SUCKER OUT OF YOU!

LOL-All day sucker, haven't heard that in a long time.

Seriously, what are these people thinking. I don't know 700 people I could invite. Debi is right, she should go to the Day Old Store & stock up on Twinkies. I know she may be a friend of your sister & your sister may want to help out by having you do the cake but like everyone else said, I'd run as fast as I could!

I usually try to stay out of these kinds of discussions because they make me sooo mad, but I am feeling particularly irritable today. I am so tired of people who want something for nothing! For some reason they have this sense of entitlement and everyone owes them something.

I'm sure they don't go to the grocery store and try to negotiate the price of a gallon of milk, but don't mind asking me to spend 3 days working for free so they can get a cheap cake!

Maybe the real problem is they don't really know what does into the making of a wedding cake, especially one to serve 700 people. Maybe the article JanH posted would be helpful.

Sorry for the rant, but my nerves on edge today!

Sure, she should make her own cake... Like this one http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2008/07/inspiration-vs-perspiration.html or like these http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2009/01/big-day-big-wrecks.html

I think that any of those would qualify as a $300 cake for 700 people icon_lol.gif

She can't even do the Krispy Kreme thing for 300$, last time I had one of their donuts it was 60cents.
The only way to do a cake to serve 700 for anywhere close to 300$ would be to go to Sam's and get 7 full sheets, and even then I think they are 47$ each at my Sam's, so that would put her $29 over "budget".

Tell her that you've heard mud pies are cheap and healthy... You know, organic. And you have a seemingly endless supply of ingredients.

Reading this I was thinking the same thing Jan and Indy did. Her math is way off. I would have clearly pointed out to her that $1.50 x 700 does not equal $300.

The best suggestion I'd have her call around to bakeries in the area and even send her to the grocery store for a cake. She won't get a $300 cake to serve 700 people there, but it will be there problem and not yours.

I wouldn't sit around trying to figure out how to bake a 700 serving cake for $300. Let her worry about it. She will either realise she needs to up her budget or as others stated only feed a small portion of her guests.

Even I charge at least $2 a serving, so all she could get from me would be 150 servings. I'd hate to be the other 550 wedding guests.

I totally understand budgets, but you have to be realistic with them. You have to do some research and figure out what you want and how much you will have to spend to get it. A budget isn't a number you just pick out of thin air.

You know what one bride told me she was doing... having everyone bring a covered dish to the reception!! That is just so tacky!! Needless to say, I was a little out of her price range. Maybe that is what this bride plans to do. Sounds like half the guest may not get cake.

Weddings like this are all about the GIFTS, not about the guests. If they thought they could get away with handing each guest a starlight mint for dessert, they probably would.

And I can tell you if I were a guest at that wedding, I'd be getting my envelope right back and putting a $5 bill in there...that's oughta cover Spagetti-o's and a munchkin! LOL!!!! icon_wink.gif

The bride in the OP is a selfish gimmee-pig or an idiot or both.

First, the budget you can afford determines how many guests you invite. This is a simple rule. Why can't brides learn it?

If she's really determined to have 700 of her "nearest and dearest" (I don't even KNOW that many people!) at her wedding, she'd better be ready to lay out $1,400 MINIMUM for the cake.

Somehow I don't think she actually wants all 700 of the invitees at the wedding. In fact, it appears she's counting on it. But you'd better believe she's excpecting a pricey gift from everyone of those invitees (how dare s/he give me less than $100! It's myyyyy weddinnnnnng!).

As for any bride who requests her guests to supply any part of the wedding, up to and including "pot-luck" receptions. That is just rude rude rude rude rude. Not only would I not attend such a wedding, I wouldn't send so much as a card to the "happy couple" and I'd seriously rethink whether they are people I want in my life.

Here's a thought what kind of bride on a "Budget" has a wedding for 700 PEOPLE!! She is just trying to get something for nothing, cake for 700 ppl is an extreme amount of work! You will have yourself for doing this for $300. Stand your ground, she is taking advantage of you, will 700 what kind of Buget do you really think she is on. Bet the catering isn't cutting there price 80%.

If i sold cakes i wouldn't even begin to try to figure out how to make enough cake for 700pp for $300. That wouldn't even cover materials would it? Just wish her luck in finding someone to do this for her. Hahaha

Please tell the bride to go to Helen Waite.

This thread has made me laugh out loud! Went to a wedding once and they actually had a "band" they knew play at the wedding. During the reception the band would periodically remind everyone, "We're doing this for the couple for free, so if you wouldn't mind dropping your donations into the (aluminum foil covered!) shoe box, we'd appreciate it." AWFUL! Maybe she could try this! hahaha!
