Blow dryer same effect as steamer?

I don't have a steamer and want to make my fondant shiny. Would a blow dryer have the same effect? Anyone tried it? I don't want it sticky- what else could I do? Does Pam dry- and how fast?
I need to be very careful not to touch other areas on the cake - it's a guitar and it's only for part of the bodyicon_smile.gif

I'm not sure about the blow dryer, but other methods mentioned were:

PAM
shortening
confectioner's glaze
jam glaze
edible varnish
corn syrup + liquor

i would honestly say.... no blow dryer.... on all of sharon zambito's dvd's.. she cleans with crisco on paper towel.. and the wipes again with clean paper towel.. she is the BEST..... i mean in showing this technique...hth

I doubt that a blow dryer would have the same effect since it's the moisture that causes the shine and you probably risk melting the buttercream or ganache underneath your fondant.

You can also paint with a brush and water. It will be sticky at first but will then dry to a shine. See my "Bratz" cake. The black ribbon and cake board were both painted with water. Gives a great shine. I'd post the pic here but I don't know how.

You can always test various methods on a scrap piece of fondant to see which will work best for you.

i tried spraying with PAM and then wiping with a paper towel. unfortunately it got little itty bitty paper towel threads? fibers? on my fondant. you'd have to stick your face right on top of it to see, but i was very let down to have noticed it. perhaps it was the brand i was using.

I ended up buying a cheapo steamer for 20 bucks and it is worth the money. I have found, tho, that spraying straight water through an airbrush if you have one can create a nice shine...

I tried to shrinkwrap cookies that were covered with fondant before, and the fondant melted from the heat of the blowdryer. I think that might happen on the cake too.

Hmmmm hot dry air VS warm moist air. No I don't think it would work.
