hey guys, before i finalize anything i would like to get your opinion! I dont have alot of experience with decorating cakes but i wanted to try my hand at make an engagement ring cake for my sister's engagement party. My idea is to make an exact replica of her engagement ring in the box, the reason this is a little difficult is, its a emerald cut aqua marine surrounded by diamonds, this is where my question comes in, if you were to make that ring would you use:

1) gumpaste/fondant and sprinkle with silver for the band and diamonds and blue for the stone? or

2) would u make the band from gum paste and the stone out of sugar (isomalt) and set it into the gumpaste/fondant ring, and if you use the isomalt, how would u shape it into a rectangle, is it workable as it starts to cool.

Also, the party is feb. 6th 2010, when would u start making it, if i wanted to make sure it came out right, how long will the ring keep? Please guys i need your help, i really want this to be special and i want this cake to be a screaming success! P.s. would it help if you saw a pic of the ring?
