Hi CC guys,

Wanted to give you all a heads-up. We just posted a video showing a caketop made by feeding SugarVeil Icing thru an electronic cutter - here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/sugarveil

Thanks much,

So happy you all are enjoying the video.

Chef Julie, you don't need to have a special mat if you have a silicone mat to cast the sheet of SugarVeil on (see how to do this in the "Flower Faces" article in the Press Releases section on our site). Then you can just peel the SugarVeil sheet and place it onto any one of those flexible cutting mats (Walmart even sells them). Just don't cast SugarVeil directly on those, because (even with greasing) it doesn't want to release easily.

We have a 'cut to fit' mat that you can cast onto and allows SugarVeil to peel nicely from. It's not on the site, but (shhhh...this hasn't been announced yet) it'll be free with online purchase at SugarVeil.com, and we'll be posting the info on both our Facebook and Twitter pages soon.

But if you already have a cutting mat you use, and you'd like to try to cast SugarVeil directly onto it, just be sure to test a small area first to be sure that it'll release SugarVeil easily (and don't forget to grease it, too). If the mat doesn't have a slick surface, there could be a chance it would work - it's worth a shot, at least.

"Do you think I could cast the sugarveil directly onto one of my Cricut mats?"

We've always chosen food-grade cutting mats to cast SugarVeil onto.
Thanks Greengyrl - emilyg

Am I able to purchase suagrvail sugar in 1lb pouches?
I looked on the site and all I saw was the pail. I do not need that much, I am just a hobbyist .

Thanks

Zoraya, we'll announce all via Facebook and Twitter - here are the addresses to list yourself as a fan/follower: [/url]http://www.facebook.com/pages/SugarVeil-Icing/58910664892?ref=sgm or twitter.com/sugarveil

But remember - you don't need this mat if you already have a silicone mat that you can use to spread a thin sheet of SugarVeil onto (see above).

Kkitchen, the smaller, 1 lb. pouches are available thru our vendors. Global Sugar Art and Icing Images are two of them. Thanks! emilyg

Emily, I can't tell you how happy I am to have found out about suagrveil. I have been pulling my hair out trying to make clean fondant cuts with the cricut without jamming up the blade and cricut machine, the sugarveil is just what I need. thanks soooo much ;P

Sure thing, Lisa. And oh - regarding the cutting mats - add the code "Free Mat" if you happen to place a sugarveil.com order this week and get a free cutting mat with any purchase. They're not on the site, or a regular stock item, but we're giving them away this week with any purchase. Thanks much, emilyg

Ok - so I watched the video over the weekend and did my first cuts today. It works so much nicer than gumpaste! Love it - thanks for giving us this idea. Now I need to design a cake, cookies, etc... to use designs on.

I spread out three sheets of sugarveil, was a bit impatient and the first one was too tacky so it just gunked up. Let the second one rest long enough and it cut perfectly! No more gumpaste in the Cricut here!

Yes, "Free Mat" in the comments section is fine to alert us to send the mat.

Like we show in the DVD, be sure to grease these mats with Crisco (not spray oil), and smooth the SugarVeil on thinly - the setting time will be dependent upon how thick you spread SugarVeil, as well as the humidity of where you are working, which means the setting time could be anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Leaving the mat in the open overnight is usually too long (unless you live in the Tropics), as you do not want the SugarVeil to dry. When the spread SugarVeil is properly "set", it will not feel tacky at all, and it will be dry to the touch. At this point, if you are not ready to use it, you can store the SugarVeiled mat out of Sunlight in a zipped plastic bag (those 2.5 gallon Ziplocs are the perfect size for the mat), and the SugarVeil will remain flexible for at least a few days or so.

What's great is that you can use these mats for lots of SugarVeil techniques - making those wonderful bows that look just like fabric (if you don't have the Starter Kit with our DVD that shows how, you can get an idea from some of the articles our website). You can also use the Confectionery Comb to comb lines and make striped 'fabric' for bows (see the PDF "SugarVeiling" in the Featured Magazines tab on our sugarveil.com website) with this mat. You can even use a rolling cutter or electronic cutter or other metal tool directly on these mats, which you of course cannot do with a silicone mat.

As for spreading SugarVeil, if you don't have our 12" Confectioners' Spreader, you can use a wallpaper smoothing tool like we did when we filmed the video years ago, or make-do with other types of spreading tools you might have on hand. Our Confectioners' Spreader came to be because all the existing tools we liked using (wallpaper ones included) were only 10" long.

Probably more info than you all needed, but please let me know if you've any additional questions about any of this. Thanks! -emilyg.

Hi Emily, just want to make sure I understand correctly. The mat that you can get free right now can be used under the sugarveil in a cutting machine (cricut) and it will not cut it? (I guess a regular silicone mat could not be used) is that correct? Thanks again for your help

Hi Lisa,

Yes, you don't want to use a silicone mat in an electronic cutter, because metal tools (especially cutting tools) damage the silicone mat. The free 'cut to fit' mat we're sending out this week is actually made to be used with cutting tools, and it's similar to what we used in the electronic cutter on our youtube.com/sugarveil video [we say 'cut to fit' so people can cut them to fit the width of whatever electronic cutter they have]. Plus, as I mentioned in another post, SugarVeil releases easily from this particular mat, so you can even cast SugarVeil onto it.

Also, had someone ask about the rollers of the cutter in the video (it was a 'Wishblade', but they all work in a similar way) - we didn't remove or cut away any of the rollers to cut the SugarVeil, and it worked just great. HTH - emilyg

Hi Emily, One more question. If I purchased the Additional Accessory Pack for piping, can it be used with a regular compressor? (my hubby has one in the garage) and if so, does the pack contain everything else I would need other than the compressor? (not sure from reading the contents list because I am not sure what I would need) Thanks again.

Hi Lisa,

The air pump that comes with the Icing Dispenser operates at a really low PSI (something like 4 - 7, I think). We include the air pump because normal compressors sputter at that low a PSI rather than provide a constant and even air flow. Also, we calibrate by hand each air pump to each dispenser to ensure that the air flow is exactly consistent so you'll get really perfect lines and dots with whatever icing you are using in it. [Oh - a side note here - be sure to stir a few drops of water into your prepared SugarVeil when you use it in the Dispenser].

The Icing Dispenser is great for adding tiny details to any cake or dessert, or even to SugarVeil decorations themselves (in the lace video at youtube.com/sugarveil, we used it to draw tiny 'inserted ribbons' into the lace). If you have shaky hands, are not cake decorator, or need to trace patterns 'off the cake' with icing like I do, the Icing Dispenser is a Godsend, but it's important to note that SugarVeil also pipes really easily thru a parchment cone or regular piping bag fitted with a tiny tip.

We have the Accessory Pack available because some people like to keep their non-fat icings (like SugarVeil and royal icing) separate from the fat containing ones (like ganache, buttercream, chocolate melts, etc), and the extra cartridges, tips and other accessories included (minus the Dispenser) allow them to do just that. Did this make sense and answer your questions? Thanks much - emilyg

Emily, how long do you have to let the SV dry when you spread it like paper? I didn't spread mine very thick and its going on 5 hours. The out edges are dry to the touch but its still tacky towards the center.

That is cool! I just heard that Cricut is coming out with a machine just for fondant and gumpaste cutting. I have not tried it and didn't see how it could keep the material flat. Will have to try this soon! Although I have a Pazzle and not a Cricut.
