I am looking for a true made from scratch cake recipe. I have tried many from many different cookbooks etc, but nothing has tasted as good as the cakes i had when i was a kid...today it seems cakes are 'premanufactured' in taste and the ONLY cake to come close to tasting like a good home-made from grandmas recipe is from Publix supermarkets here in the south...even tho i know that is prob premanufactured as well--- does anyone have a good old fashioned scratch recipe that is moist, fluffy (but not too airy) good texture and tastes like its home-made?? Even the bakeries around here that bake/sell cakes are sometimes dry, taste like they are days old and just are not good in taste especially for a bakery. Thanks in advance!

So you're looking for a scratch cake recipe that tastes like a Publix cake?

have you looked in the recipes here? There are a lot of scratch recipes. I don't know what Publix cakes taste like, but I'm sure they're probably made in a factory and frozen just like every other grocery store chain.

You don't say if you're looking for a white cake, butter (yellow) cake, chocolate, whatever... I've tried the Mermaid Bakery's vanilla cake and it's pretty good. I usually use doctored cake mixes and I think they taste just fine and a heck of a lot better than most grocery store cakes.

To each their own, but let's not get a debate started between scratch baking and using mixes, those tend to get out of hand here. icon_smile.gif

Check this website out. http://www.exclusivelyfood.com.au/ It's an Australian one. I think the story behind this is just two older ladies passionate about food and cooking. I use their white and dark chocolate mud cake recipes and everyone tells me that it's just like grandma used to make. I've never tasted better.... In fact every recipe I try on that site is devine. Be sure to read the comments section of each recipe as there's loads more tips. They're geniuses... Haha

Well if I were to make a "homemade cake like grandma's" I would need a box of Betty Crocker Devils Food cake and fluffy white frosting mix.
Oh and lots of love, can't forget the love.

No it's a powder that you add hot water to and mix with a hand mixer and OMG it is so good, basically a 7 minute frosting in 2 minutes, because seriously who wants to wait a whole 7 minutes for frosting...lol

I know, but their cakes taste pretty good. I used to live right behind the wharehouse. Bakery and a friend of mine worked there and its all from scratch but baked manufctured style and frozen. Thanks for the links to the recipes above. I will give them a try... I particularly like white cakes they are my fav but a good chocolate would be. good as well.
