How do I put fondant over figure?

The figure is made out of rice krispy treat and this is my first time attempting to put fondant over it. One character is Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants.

Any tips are greatly apprieciated!!

Here's a step by step tutorial on making a sitting Elmo cake topper from RKT that should be helpful:

If you need a very smooth surface for your fondant, you can either cover the bumpy RKT with R/I or buttercream.

Some members have even sanded the RKT's:

By the way, you can sand royal icing. I used to do that for cake shows back in the 70's when fondant was not really known. When doing the royal icing and sanding it, I would do that procedure 3 or 4 times. Yes, you do want a smooth surface for the fondant. You could even put some buttercream over the royal icing when it dries.
