I was hoping someone might be able to share how to make the top of a gift cake look like a lid. I'm afraid that if I try to cut it straight after the fondant is on the cake it will mess up the bottom layer of fondant.

Thanks for any suggestions
Debbie

Use a mixture of fondant and gum paste. Turn your cake tin upside down, dust it with corn starch and model your lid over this. Leave in place until dry. It should then come off the tin quite easily and you can transfer it to your cake

See I am always trying to do things the hard way. That seems so easy and Iwould have never come up with it.

Thank you! My square cake pan doesn't have real square corners. I hope I can square the corners off ok doing it this way.

Thanks

I'm excited too but I still haven't heard. They are supposed to post the results tomorrow morning on the Maryland State Fair website under Home Arts. I will be going to the fair on Sunday. I know everything has been judged and the ribbons are on them I guess it just takes them a while to load it all in. icon_cry.gif

I'll let everyone know when I find out!

I loved the hint of molding the lid on top of cake pan using fondant and gumpaste. Are people supposed to push this aside when they eat the cake, or is it eaten as well? Or do you somehow take it off before you cut the cake? Please excuse me if these questions are silly. I am fairly new to decorating cakes.

I would think you would take it off. Especially with it being a gumpaste mixture. MissBaritone?
