I've seen this before many times on CC and I'm a bit confused. They're not asking for money or personal information that I can see. They just seem to be asking whether or not this cake can be done. Sorry to be such a dunce, but can someone please explain to me what the actual scam is??? Granted, it sounds a bit suspect, but then again we do have people from all over the world on CC and English isn't always everyone's first language so I probably shouldn't assume that just because someone's English isn't proper, that they're a scammer.

I'm not trying to be a smarta**, I'm just really really curious.

Newmans, they don't come right out in the first contact and ask for this stuff. Several conversations in, if they hooked you, they ask for bank account numbers, or arrange for Western Union transfers.

Ah - OK. In that case I get it. I've never heard anyone talk about it going that far before. All I've heard about is the request for the cake and the bad grammar.

Or they send a phony "Western Union" (or some other) payment for thousand of dollars over the cost of the cake. They ask you to cash it, then give the "extra" amount to the "courier." By the time the bank (and you) find out it was a phony payment, all involved are long gone, and you're stuck with non-payment PLUS all the overdraft issues.

You guys are too funny!! icon_lol.gif

Okay guys; tell me what do you think about this email; is this a scammer, somebody fishing for info, or just a person who knows what the heck they want:

Hello,

While looking for a baker in the Nashville area I came across your website. Unfortunately you do not have a lot of information about your company posted there. Would it be possible for your to answer the following questions to help us make am informed decision before hiring your company as we are from out of state and will be paying for our daughters wedding which will be held in Nashville in the fall.

How long have you been in business?
Are you licensed by the state of Tennessee?
Do you have a food service license from the health department?
Do you have a commercial bakery or do you bake out of your home?
Are you insured?
How many employees do you have on staff?
Are you able to handle large event cakes? - 600 guests or more
Are you able to make multiple cakes for the same wedding over a three day period? i.e., bridal shower luncheon, rehearsal dinner, out of town guest brunch the day after the wedding.
What cake, fillings, and icing flavors do you offer?
Do you offer private consultations?

Please reply ASAP with the answers so that we may set a consultation appointment date.

Best Regards,

Dr. Reed

Oh, I do have that I do tastings and I have my cake flavors on my website. It's on the FAQ page.

I don't think I've ever seen a scam like this one, so it might be legitimate. I'd just refer him back to your website for the answers that are on there, ans give him a blanket "yes" to all the licensing stuff.

However, I'd also tell him that you need to communicate with the bride so that you can find out what she wants. If this is really a father who's trying to "arrange" things he sounds like a real control freak. (and being one myself I can tell one when I see one icon_wink.gif )

Oh, it's actually a woman!! LOL!!

Just never had anybody asked about all of the licensing stuff!! Didn't know if it was someone trying to set me up (I do have my license) or what.

The only thing I can say about the licensing questions is that maybe the reception venue won't let any unlicensed food in. I couldn't make a wedding cake for my cousin because I wasn't licensed.

Hopefully it is not a scam and a legit request.

Oops, sorry, I didn't read it right!

I think it's good that people ask if you're licensed, so that isn't an unusual question to me. It's just a LOT of questions. But it's good that they're trying to narrow it down before they make appointments, I guess.

This is mine from today! They even called me! It was on my answering machine though some relay service asking me to reply to the request through email. Some nerve! Is there anyway to turn these people in?

If you really want to turn them in you can go here for information http://www.justice.gov/spam.htm They say it's hard to catch people if they're in countries other than the U.S., though. Make sure to hit "full headers" on the email screen (it's usually a little link at the bottom of the page) for any emails that you forward to the authorities before you send them, that way they can see where it came from.

if you want to read about some of the scammers (not cake related but scammers anyway) getting some of their own back, this site is always a fun read: http://www.419eater.com/html/letters.htm

the trophey room has some fun pics and although they usually deal with the nigerian scammers, they are happy to mess with other scammers because they enjoy it so much

I would have had to add a line in there about the rat problem they have been fighting, but not to worry you will make sure that NONE of the rat droppings from the empty boxes get on the cake.
