Hello. My hubby got me the Cake Bible book for Xmas. I was just wondering if anyone has made any of the recipes in the book and could recommend any of them to try. Thanks!
I am pretty new myself... and have never heard of this! I can't wait to see the comments! Merry belated Christmas! -Laura
In the Cake Bible, Rose has a recipe for yeast waffles from Marion Cunningham. I have used this recipe for many many years as a Christmas morning tradition in our family when my children were still at home. Love it.
I love my Cake Bible!! I have other books by Rose. There is so much background info for baking that it's more than a recipe book. I always use her Mousseline Buttercream recipe. It stands up so fantastically here in our climate. And her cheesecakes are delicious! Can't go wrong with the basic cakes either!
I've had the Cake Bible for several years but have only made a couple of things out it. The Chocolate Bread was very good and easy. I have also made the Mousseline (sp?) buttercream frosting. It was also pretty tasty. She has a lot of good information about trouble shooting when a cake doesn't turn out perfectly. I tend to use it more for information than for the recipes because they are not adjusted for high altitude.
I have tried the Mousseline and Neoclassic Buttercreams. They were both so yummy! The book has lots of information and tips on baking, it's great!
I've tried the Golden Grand Marnier Cake (p.44) with ganache on top and the Pumpkin-Walnut cake (p.71), both with great results. I also love her new book called Rose's Heavenly Cakes. I've tried a couple of cakes in this book that were absolutely delicious - the Grand Marnier Wedding Cake and the Spice Cake with Peanut Buttercream.
I've only tried her "basic" all-occasion cakes, but they were awesome. My husband, who isn't a cake eater (gasp!) even likes them. The crumb texture is great and they've always come out perfectly. I don't think you will be disappointed.
I also got the Cake Bible for Christmas. I've been toying around with the idea of doing a Julie & Julia thing with it (although with a much looser timeline). It'd be fun to have a group that was doing it together.

I have the book as well and I tried the White Chocolate Whisper cake. It was really good. The smell was fantastic and did not need any frosting.... although I did ice it with a plain buttercream. I am going to try the other recipes.
Oh my goodness, so many to choose from. The first cake I ever did was the one on the cover. I like to make the swiss pancakes on special occasions. I've done just about all the buttercremas and ganaches, except the honey one. That's just never appealed to me. You just gotta go in there and start picking cakes to try. You may not like everything. I like just about everything, but don't care for her cheesecake.
Lucky! I put it on my Chrismas list but Santa didn't bring it! Let's try again for my B-day!
Oh yeah, and now she has "Heavenly Cakes". I will be doing the red velvet tomorrow and spending a lot of time working my way through that one.

Santa only got it for me because I do all his shopping for him. At least half the things I opened on Christmas were things I bought and had DH wrap up for me so that the kids wouldn't wonder why mommy didn't have many presents.
Sometimes (*cough* most of the time *cough*), much help is needed to end up with presents... there are rarely real surprises.
