Wow, you guys are awesome!

Just to clarify, I'm not leaving CC, so y'all are stuck with me!! icon_biggrin.gif I'll just be on here as the hobby baker and not the "in business" baker.

Making the decision was the hard part, but it was amazing that once the decision was made on how fast everything moved along!

Classiccakes, that is so funny that we have similar interests but did them in reverse order! Great minds, ya know! thumbs_up.gif

I'm returning deposits to my 2010 clients and referring them to jillmakescakes and to classiccakes (so take good care of them for me!). It's a little hard to reject those new calls coming in, though. I had to "give away" my fraternity boys to a local caterer. The fraternity organizer copied me on a wonderful email in which he told my caterer friend, "....we were spoiled by Debi and how she took care of us!"

cfao, I am holding you to that date over a cup of coffee!!

leahs, I KNEW we were joined at the hip in a number of things! Add this one to the list!

FromScratch, your comment was a big LOL! icon_lol.gif

The arthritis began as a result of a car wreck I was in when I was 16. That goopy stuff between our vertebraes is gone between two of my neck vertebrae, so intead of my bones having a nice soft cushion to rest on, I have bone rubbing bone. Those who deal with it, will SO understand how painful that can be when it kicks in.

Since I was 16, I've had to watch how I sit, how I sleep, can't fall asleep in the chair watching tv, can't sleep in the car because I have to watch how I hold my head. When it kicks in, I can't sit, stand, lay down, sleep ... nothing. You have no idea what "constant pain" is unless you really deal with it. I know I never understood it before it happened to me. And when it's your neck .... all of your nerves and blood flow runs thru your neck to your brain. And this little skinny "stem" that holds up your head is suddenly weak and unable to do it's job. I just can't describe it properly.

HIstory has always been a passion. My extreme interests are the Civil War and WWII on the Germany theater. (At least 2 teachers had to change grades for my kids when I pointed out that they were wrong in what they were teaching my children!) My favorite character in history is Harriet Tubman. Fell in love with her story when I was about 4th grade and I think she's the person who sparked my love of history.

I'm very excited about teaching history. I've long thought that people find history "boring" because it's taught wrong. icon_rolleyes.gif Dates and places mean nothing unless they also know the story behind it. And history is nothing BUT stories of drama, excitement, adventure and romance. I've already decided (and hope I'll be able to do it) to do my thesis on "First Ladies of the Civil War Era" ... 1850 to 1870.

My ultimate ULTIMATE dream would be to be "Dr. Debi" and teach at a university level. But let's see if I can survive middle schoolers, first! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Ok, gotta run for awhile .... Brim Familly Christmas this afternoon!

Wow! What a big change for you. I wish you all the best! Life has a funny way of pushing us where we need to go, doesn't it?

You'll be a terrific teacher, and I'm glad to hear that you want to teach middle schoolers. They really need teachers who understand them. A lot of people think it's the worst age to teach, but they have their charms at that age.

I'll look forward to hearing about your new adventures.

Debi, Thank you so much for all the inspiration you have given all of us over the years. I'm glad to see that you will still be with us, even if you aren't in business anymore. Someone like you just can't leave - you're a cornerstone of CC! After all, you are the matriarch!

I was also a history major in college, before I switched to Accounting. My concentration was the homefront in WWII, things like victory gardens, Rosie the Riveter, and rationing. I have a cookbook of WWII rationing baking recipes - some of those are doozies (imagine using beet juice as a sweetener!)

anyways, best of luck in school, and thanks for everything!

Debi-
I completely understand and support your decision. Good health trumps EVERYTHING as far as I'm concerned!! Isn't it interesting the paths we're lead to travel. I applaud your enthusiastic pursuit of your dream. I know from experience that it is rarely easy, but always worth it. I've been pursuing mine for almost 12 years!

Personally, I can't wait to see what amazing things you do next!!

Debi, I am excited for you! I don't post much yet but read lots and have always loved reading your posts! I'm from Indiana also, and graduted from Ball State in 2007 with an honors degree in history. I started out as a teaching major and then switched to just history with the plans of someday going to grad school to get my Ph.D...now I'm a SAHM baking cakes for fun!
BTW, my father is an assistant superintendent at a school just outside of Indy and has been in the school system for years...when you get your teaching license give me a shout! thumbs_up.gif

How exciting to be starting something new! I just retired from 29 years of teaching history to middle schoolers-gotta love those hormones in tennis shoes. I took up the baking hobby after I retired, so we went at this from opposite directions.

I'll still be looking for your advice, so you'd better stick around. You can probably squeeze us in between work and college. And if you want any hints about teaching history, maybe I can help you for a change.

Good luck to you!

<-- look at avatar for 1st reaction. (implies concern)

comment 1: is there nothing they can do, such as fuse the vertebra, to relieve the pain? surely something is possible (note on fusion of vertebra -- and then you'll have a perfectly truthful reason to be "stiff-necked" in you refusal to do stuff!)

<--- look at avatar for 2nd reaction (implies confusion)

HISTORY? ::scratches head:: I would have thought business administration/management! heck, you could probably get a degree just based on "life experience"

<---look at avatar for 3rd reaction (implies happily surprised)

wow, great opportunities have landed in the lap --- God closed a small window and opened up airplane hanger size doors it would seem!

Best wishes on all your new endeavors.

oh, ya -- and as others have pointed out and I will remind again....

You're NOT off the hook, oh forum matriarch -- you still got lots and lots of "cake children" who need lots of raising here on CC. Now get to work "mom"

Debi, I'll do my best to take as good care with your brides as you would.

Let me just say that I am honored that Debi trusted me enough to send her clients my way. Talk about humbling.

Doug- best post ever!

So, should we all chip in to get Debi some fabulously handsome massage therapist to help her aching neck? icon_lol.gif

You'll make an amazing, amazing teacher...I have no doubt.

Hey - I want to chip in on the massage for Indy! I kind of got a feeling something was up a while ago when you mentioned getting a degree in History. You will be a wonderful teacher - there is no doubt about that. I am so thankful you will still be here for all of us. I agree on the "life experiences" - you really should check into that for some of the credits you have to have. (serious on this).

I know you don't like the mushy stuff, but I am sending you {{{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}} and great wishes for a wonderful new adventure!

I always wonder how did you find time in your busy schedule to help us.

So I hope this situation can only mean that you will have more time for all your students here at CC. I sure hope so.

We have learned so much from you, and I personally hope you continue teaching us.

Please stay in this forum, don't migrate to the hobby forum. We need you here.

No condolences Indy, just the very best and loving wishes for you.

You should be excited on your new venture! History is a good thing, and believe me, when it comes to having to survive middle school students, you will need all of your wits about you. I've been a sub in that grade for a while, and they love to push those buttons.

As for leaving your catering business, I can almost bet the cake on it that your clients will miss your awesome treats/savory dinners!!

Best of luck to you, and I for one, will still be one of those readers of your blog that will never go away. You are the best! We are all lucky to know you!!

Thank you for everything you have shared, and everything you still have to teach us!! I'll be reading and waiting to see what you do next.

All my best wishes,
Donna

I long for a career change but I'm too damn chicken/comfortable to break the ties.

How exciting for you....hey, are you going "school clothes shopping"? icon_biggrin.gif

Wishing you all the best in school, you'll rock it for sure! I hope this career change will bring you some relief from your neck pain...my dear friend has the same problem and had to give up hairdressing because of the pain.

P.S. You're living my DH's dream.....he always says he wants to leave the banking world and teach history at the college level.

Just got home from Family Christmas. Hubby's-nephew's-wife is a teacher; son's-girlfriend is a teacher. So I had lots of good, fun conversation today!

this-mama-rocks, that video is so cool! Forwarding to the teachers mentioned above!

Lyns082608, I've got your number, lady! icon_wink.gif Son's-girlfriend is pursuing her masters to become a principal, so I reminded her that nepotism can be a GOOD thing ..... especially when she's in a position to hire teachers! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Doug, as always, you just crack me up! Ironic that while I complain about public school systems, here I am heading into the "war room". But I believe in "put up or shut up" ..... and "shut up" is not something I do well! icon_rolleyes.gificon_biggrin.gif

dkelly .. *MY* hubby is a former banker who would also love to teach history! I keep telling him to sign up with me. Daughters are teasing me about "oh god ...you're not going to start wearing teacher sweaters are you?" (you know ... those really ornate holiday decorated things that they SWEAR only teachers wear?) icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

I was having some horrible neck pains and I stopped leaning my head on my hand and propping myself up on my elbow slouchign at the computer. I was cured. I'm not saying that will help you but I hope you do get some very good relief.

So I'd like to say welcome to my world of hobby baking/caking but I just got a call from a fellow caker--we're meeting up on Saturday to discuss business potentialities---hahahaha I always have a crazy cake deal going. Or I'm in between crazy cake deals depressed as all get out.

So anyhow--multiplied congratulations and beaucoudimous* blessings
