another good comparison- I use vanilla bean paste which is much cheaper than pure vanilla bean. I believe 1 vanilla bean you use 1 tbsp pf the paste. I always use the paste in creme brulee and it works great thumbs_up.gif

This sounds very interesting too....
I'm going to give this recipe a try as well.....anything to save money and still have a "GREAT TASTE".... sounds good to me.

ok, I was interested in doing this and asked my BF and his friends. They just happened to have a 1/5 vodka in the house. (imagine that!) For those who were wanting to know a measurement.

The bottle is 750 ML

Hope this helps others. I am going to pick up the ingredients tonight and try this.

hey joe.....was going thru looking for a recipe and happened upon this subject.....i also have made my own vanilla for about 15 years.....for some reason this just amazes people!!! icon_biggrin.gif what i do is use the size larger than a fifth (i think that's a quart...) and then i pour out 1 cup of the vodka.....(you can do whatever you want with that icon_biggrin.gificon_eek.gif )...and then i add one cup bourbon........i use this in my cheesecakes.....i don't strain mine either...its a wonderful flavor! Ok I really want to try this recipe but my question is this. Is it clear or not. Do you use in just the cake mix or can you use it in the BC. I was told to use only clear vanilla

if i'm not using it in a cake........what i do mpitrelli is pour some in a cup and let the specks of vanilla settle to the bottom...then only get from the top what you need to use in the buttercream.....other more experienced decorators may feel differently....but i don't think you use enough to change the color any....and i just made several large batches two weekends ago for my daughters wedding cake.....i even used this vanilla in my rolled buttercream......hope this helps.....Donna usaribbon.gif

Just to clarify on size. I used to be a bartender, so I know my stuff. A fifth is 750 mL, so called because it's approximately one fifth of a gallon. The larger bottle is a liter.

I may try making my own vanilla too. I recently threw my husband a cocktail party for his birthday and we wound up with lots of liquor leftover, vodka & bourbon included!
