PURE vanilla extract - Page 2

To think about it icon_rolleyes.gif ...vanilla extract has alcohol in it, so yeah I do think this would work for me icon_lol.gif ....what I dont understand is it smells so great and taste so bad by itself, does making it make it taste better alone? I guess it would we dont have access to the beans around here.... so I have to stick with my McCormicks Vanilla, but this is one I will have to try when I am back in the states....can you post it in recipes so I can save it?

Vanilla Vodka (the kind I make) tatses nasty by itself. But when used in cooking, WOW thumbs_up.gif

i already bought the vanilla bean,but how much is a fifth of a botlle?and other question do you put sugar or water ? icon_cry.gif

I just checked mine and it did not have an amount on it. A fifth is the middle size bottle. And you don't need any water or sugar. That just dilutes it.

I posted the recipe under Mexican recipes as I did not know where to put it. There was no "spices/extracts" section. icon_cry.gif

I am making some right now it smells good but I dont know what it taste like... I do know that there is now floaties from the beans in the vodka and I am going to have to strain it when I am ready to use it ...



I don't strain mine. The "floaties" are the seeds and they disseappear when I add them to the batter.

I was looking around and found that, for some unknown reason, the recipe was removed. Either that or I did not post it correctly. thumbsdown.gif The recipe posted here was the same.

I've use Mexican vanilla for years.. everyone that has eaten my cakes absolultely loves them and orders more .. the one I get smells great and tastes great too .. I have a friend/co-worker that goes into Mexico often .. she brings me back bottles when I need them icon_smile.gif

I've never made the vanilla, but I have used the vodka and vanilla bean with coffee to make kahlua, and use the same method of shaking every day, etc., very good stuff. Years ago I would make it and give small bottles as gifts, especially at Christmas.

My decorating instructor buys clear vanilla in bulk from Watkins, and he sells me what I need in smaller bottles. I think it is good vanilla, too, but maybe I'll try this recipe! vj

They sell it where the spices are sold, generally 2 per bottle.

I'm pretty dang cheap, so just to be sure... there should be no danger of carcinogens in imitation vanilla, right?

Not that I know of. I've never heard of anyone getting Vanilla cancer before. icon_razz.gificon_biggrin.gif

Did you ever figure out where the recipe went......your recipe would make about 3 1/3 cups, I think I converted that right, anyway, that is quite a savings. I use the Tone's Brand that I get at Sam's and it's $12.88 for 16 oz.....I'd like to try your recipe....even if I have to wait 2 months before I can use it! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif
