Hi All ~
How do I make my fondant flowers look & stay shiny? When my fondant ribbon roses harden they look a little dried out. I've heard about edible varnish but I can't find it here in the US. icon_cry.gif The only website I found was based in England. I want to keep the flowers their original color, so adding dusts or sparkles don't work. Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Angela

I know that steaming gumpaste flowers makes them shiny, but I've never tried it with fondant. I use confectioner's glaze to add sheen to fondant, gumpaste and chocolate. I get it at my local cake supply. It is a food grade lacquer.

I steam mine. Just let the kettle boil with the lid off and when there is a lot of steam, just swoosh them through a coule of times. I let them dry and repeat.

I steam my flowers by holding them over steam(boiling kettle) and waving them back and forth but be very careful as they can drop off if held there for too long. As soon as they are looking wet take away and let dry standing up. It doesn't take long. I also use confectioners glaze but sometimes they look a bit false if you should put on too much. Good luck

I went surfing for a varnish recipe, found one on this site....
http://mysite.verizon.net/~vze24ykw/recipes.html

Many interesting recipes, from cake to candy as well as fondant ect.
anyhow the recipe from this site for varnish is as follows:
1 tsp. gelatin
3 tsp. water
1 tsp. liquid glucose
Sprinkle gelatin in the water, let stand until spongy, dissolve until clear over hot water not boiling add liquid glucose and stir until ingredients are well combined, put it in an airtight container. the mix will get very stiff, to use it, heat in a container of hot not boiling water paint onto item while still hot. do not refrigerate.

Lightly spray with a mist bottle filled with Vodka! The alcohol will evaporate!
