made cookies at my daughter's house yesterday. my granddaughter spilled TWO containers of these ... one silver; one pearl. daughter tried sweeping them up and said, 'You just can't sweep little balls!" she was stepping on them all afternoon .... they may be little but they really hurt under your foot! 
I believe it all started here in my home state of CA when some crazy lawyer decided that if you at 8 POUNDS of these at one time then it COULD be toxic. Ok, who in the world eats that much of ANYTHING at one time? Anyways, since CA is such a sue-happy state, the courts decided not to take the chance. SIGH. So to have silver dragees I have to start out with the white ones and hand paint them. SIGH. As for them breaking teeth..well, I once broke a tooth on sushi...yup, SUSHI...what a ridiculous thing to break a tooth on...I mean, it's soft! It's just the angle you hit the food with your teeth. So yes, while it is possible to break a tooth on them, it's as likely that they could break a tooth on a candy sprinkle.

Ha, I feel your pain. I'm in KY well... they should be pronounced like "Petty." Since we're in KY, we should just tell them it's pronounced like
"Petty", as in Richard Petty of race car fame --then they'd get it.

I havent read the thread, but I figure in all these years making cakes I barely ate them. When you cut the cake they mostly fall out. And it they stay on, how many of them will stick to the piece? One maybe two?
I think most people dont eat them. I know I dont. So I dont worry too much about it.

Use 'em, but then again, I can remember playing with some mercury a classmate had brought for "show and tell" in first grade.
LOL I have a necklace/pendant that is basically mercury inside a sealed glass vial with a clear liquid (water?) and people always freak out when I wear it - what if you fall on your face and it breaks into your mouth??
Also, I love using dragees and have recently discovered the multi-colored ones - so pretty!
