After months and months of searching for a place, wouldn't you know that one found me!!
A couple of weeks ago, I got an email from my Cousin's friend who wanted me to do a cake for her fiance. I wasn't too thrilled at first, because it was sort of last minute, and I just didn't feel like doing a cake that week.
Fortunately, she was really persistent and basically wouldn't take "no" for an answer!!
So I made the cake for her and she picked it up and drove it 4 hours to Las Vegas where they were celebrating her fiance's passing the CA State Bar Exam!
The following Monday, I got a text from her saying how awesome the cake was and how great it tasted. I thanked her for her compliments, and that was it. Then a few hours later, her fiance emails me and tells me that he's opening a bakery close to my house and that he wants me to be his "cake guy!"
At first, he wasn't going to do cakes because neither him nor his partner are into decorating. They wanted to focus on doing small gourmet desserts, but all their friends kept asking if they were doing cakes! Long story short, after tasting my cake, they invited me to come meet with them, and last night we agreed that I would work at their store under their license, but as an indepent contractor and I would just pay them a percentage to cover utilities and a bit of profit for them since I'm using all their stuff!!
I'm sooo freaking excited I can't believe it!! I have been "underground" for so long and I am always turning down cakes because I didn't want the exposure or to get into trouble! But NOW...now I'm free to hit it full bore because I'm an "employee" of their bakery!!!
My Wife is THRILLED that all my cake stuff has a new home besides her laundry room!!
The bakery opens in January 2010!!
Congratulations!
You did use the terms "independent contractor" and "employee." They are vastly different and have significant tax implications. You should do some reading.
leah_s, yes, you are right!! I've been a 1099 independent contractor before when I was selling insurance, and I prefer it to being a regular W2'd employee! As an "indpendent contractor" you get TONS of deductions at the end of the year and my tax guy is the best at making sure I utilize every one of them that I can!!
Since I'm responsible for my supplies and inventory, I can write all that off, plus travel and uniforms, etc, etc. Done right, being an I.C. is awesome!!
Thanks everyone!! I can't wait to get started!! I gotta get organized and take my food handler's test!!
Congratulations! Just be sure that they do not raise the percentage as I see that you mentioned that you would also be using their stuff. Glad to see that all of your cake stuff will have a new home. :O)
Your cakes are awesome!! You'll be a huge hit (I mean even bigger than now) once you can really get your name out there! Sky's the limit!
How wonderful for you! What fun it must be to be able to let your imagination soar and to feel the freedom of legitimacy. I looked at your photos and you do an incredible job. I wish you all the luck!
I am happy for you Rob - I am sure you will do great! Your work is beautiful.
Go for it!
GOD BLESS YOU!!
Thank you everyone!!! I will keep every body posted on how the setup and settling in goes!!
Merry Christmas!
Rob
