I just received a call from a woman who wants 36 cupcakes decorated for Thursday morning, 9 AM. She wants the cupcakes to be decorated as fish. What is the going rate for standard size cupcakes?
What is the pricing for jumbo cupcakes?
Thanks in advance!
Sandy

It's different everywhere because there are different markets and different skill levels.

The norm seems to be anywhere from $2.50 -$4.00 for a regular cupcake. Some people are lower and some people charge more. Hope this helps!

I don't do cupcakes very often and pricing around here is very cheap. So I just charge $1 a piece for regular cupcakes with just frosting. It they want filling its $1.25 piece. I would go up from there depending on decoration and if custom liners were wanted. I am not licensed, so I get customers from my blog and word of mouth or I'd probably charge more.

A cupcake shop in the area that does jumbo cupcakes sells them for $3.00 a piece.

so would it be best to go by your normal per serving charge or should you charge less/more?

Not exactly sure what you meant by that?
But I just charge per cupcake. They're each just one serving.

Lots of people charge the same price for a slice of cake and a cupcake. Here are some reasons -

1. A cupcake is actually bigger than a slice of cake that's a 1x2x4.
2. They take a longer to make, bake, and decorate.
3. They are hard to transport and take a lot of time to arrange.

And then if you are making little fondant things to go on top of the cupcake - you are seriously talking extra time, which means you have to charge more money.

Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your replies. Seeing as cupcakes need to be individually decorated and are slighty larger than a cake slice, I will be charging accordingly.

Just to add to cylstrial's list, when I'm doing a wedding cake for 125, with cascading BC roses going down the side, I can decorate a 4-tier cake with a couple dozen BC roses and it looks great. But when a bride wants 125 cupcakes with a BC rose on each one, then I have to make 125 roses.

To set up a 4-tier cake, I carry the pre-assembled cake from the van to the hall, plop it on a table and I"m done. Or I carry in the cakes and take about 5 minutes to assemble the cake and I'm done. But a cupcake wedding cake requires that I touch each cake ..... 125 times, I'm setting a cupcake in place. More time for set up...... more labor costs involved.

As I mention in my blog article, some brides get the idea from wedding magz's that they can get a cupcake cheaper because they see cupcakes in the grocery for 50 cents each, but they see photos in the wedding magz's of cupcake weddings with fondant, gumpaste and intricate detailed cupcakes which require a LOT more labor than a blop of swirled BC icing on top ..... they have a problem comprehending that the cupcakes in the magz's are NOT 50 cent cupcakes.
