Has any of you made a pretzel rod palm tree? I am doing a beach cake for Saturday and thought about trying to add some of those or at least one. How hard are they and do I need to start on them tonight? What do you make the leaves out of? HELP-please icon_smile.gif

Go into the galleries section and search for "tree" ... there is a pic of a very nice looking palm tree in there icon_smile.gif

I made some pretzel rod palm trees a couple of months ago. I piped out about five long "leaves" with the leaf tip using royal icing on waxed paper, kind of in a star pattern. I let them dry overnight and then peeled them off. I then attached them to the great big pretzel rods with royal icing. The tops looked flat because of the waxed paper, but everyone was still pretty impressed by them. Next time I will probably pipe a few move royal icing leaves on top to cover the flat part.

first, get the thicker pretzels they hold up better, and they can't be to long

I first make my leaves from fondant and let them dry over night on a form, I usually use my rolling pin.

then the next day using royal icing as glue I arrange the leaves like I want them to appear on the top of the tree, and put a blob of icing in the center, allow it to get a little stiff the put the pretzel in, prop it up and let it dry. all this is done on wax paper of course.

when it's dry invert and using the same royal icing, and a leaf tip make more leaves on the top and underside to finish it off.

I've got pictures of a dora the explorer cake that I have them on,

I would be more than happy to post them

but

I'm computer stupid and can't figure out how.

I made my palm trees with the thicker pretzels as well. However, I used bc for the leaves. I inserted the pretzels into a green styrofoam block. The type you use with flower arrangements. I then piped the leaves from the tops of each stick and let dry. Of course, make extras. Some will fall or break when removing them. I was pretty easy and quick.

I am NO expert... I'll say that up front! icon_lol.gif

But I made a couple for my daughter's birthday using pretzel sticks.

We took a ball about 3 to 4 in in diameter and covered in in wax paper.. then I made a bunch of "bumpy" leaves with a thick consistency color flow and let it dry.

Took it off the paper and presto curved palms... put some royal icing in the center of the leaves as glue and stuck it on the pretzel stick which was already in the cake.

Those things were stuck on so good. There's a picture if you scroll down in my blog... click below.

I haven't made any with pretzels, but i did make some out of the big tootsie rolls. I cut the tootsie roll length wise down the center (not all the way through) and inserted a wooden dowel and closed the tootsie roll back up, then i cut the tootsie roll off of the dowel part that was going into the cake. I made my leaves out of color flow on wax paper and a flower form a couple of days before and stuck them on with royal icing. They came out great, but i think next time i wll use fondant leaves.

I've also made palm trees out of pretzel rods. I use the big ones and break them to the height I want. I stick them in the cake and use a leaf tip#350 I think it is and just pipe buttercream leaves right on the pretzel rod.
