Another weird thing I heard

This is probably the weirdest thing I've heard a bride tell me. She said that another baker (I didn't ask who) told her that you can't put the color blue on a cake because there aren't any blue foods (yes, I know blueberries, but that isn't the point) so it will look unappetizing and people won't want to eat the cake. icon_confused.gif

What?? She didn't even want a lot of blue, just light blue accents here and there on the cake. I've heard some strange stuff before, but this one was worth commenting on. Very odd...

Wait... what?? That's nuts!

What could be better than cake?

i know the no natually blue food bit (id say blueberries are actually purple). but to say it will look unapatising on a cake? i cant think of any luminous glow in the dark food (ok, apart from the tonic water) or luminous pink food either, but id still eat it!
slightly crazy lady i think.

lol actually blue is supposed to be a unapatising color. I read a diet article one time that said you should have blue plates so that it would make you want to eat less....now let me say..i have blue dishes and it does not make me want to eat any less! icon_biggrin.gif

I heard some story about Alfred Hitchcock throwing a dinner party and having all the food dyed blue to freak his guests out, but to put some blue on a cake? Wouldn't stop me from eating it! icon_biggrin.gif

So the baker refused to do her cake with blue accents because she thought it would make it look unappetizing? Oookay. She's right in theory, but it's a cake. A wedding cake, at that. If the bride wants a blue cake, you give her a damn blue cake. It will still be eaten either way.

Really icon_surprised.gif - i love being asked to do Blue Cakes - so many different shades out there - they are so *in vogue* over here - aen't they where you are from?

I'm curious - What is actually unappetizing about Blue that people have a problem with -
That's the bit i don't get - peoples theory about blue - most odd. icon_confused.gif

I've never heard that before...but my dishes are all different shades of blue and there's not a single one that makes me want to eat less icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif Sounds like one of those ideas like only eating with chopsticks or only eating while standing up...

I was taught by a French Chef. NEVER EVER use blue. Then he told us again.

The theory is that since there are no blue foods in nature, psychologically, people don't find things that are blue to look appetizing. It's a fairly well-known idea, even to people who don't cook much. It's sort of the way most fast food places are done in orange/brown/reds - it's a psychological thing that makes people not want to stay there too long. It's not calming and relaxing (like blue is) so people tend to leave in a more timely fashion. It's subtle.

I do a lot of blue cakes, I just thought it was weird to refuse to put blue accents on a cake. The entire thing wasn't blue anyway, just two ribbons on it.

If we're talking unappetizing, what about the kitty litter cakes? Or the pile of poo cakes? Those don't have any blue on them but they're still unappetizing! icon_lol.gif

Back in the day, I studied to be a clinical psychologist and read lots and lots of studies on a variety of topics And YES numerous studies over the years have definitely shown that people find blue in an UNappetizing color for food. That said, I've certainly done blue accents on a cake.
