I need a recipe for a buttercream that isn't so super sweet! I have a lady that doesn't like super sweet frostings.
Just bumping you up! I am interested in finding a recipe like this as well. I have tried the 1/2 butter and 1/2 shortening and the all shortening recipes and I think that both of these are too sweet! Hopefully someone out there can help you and me both.

there are several recipes on this post regarding icings that aren't as sweet as the normal buttercream
I found a buttercream recipe on www.ladycakes.com that's not too sweet; just tried it this week and really like it. It smooths and crusts well, but you can't use the hot spatual method to take out the last few marks, you need to use the Viva paper towel method.
Go to www.Ladycakes.com, click on recipes, and look under "B" for Buttercream Icing with Flour. They have a lot of good recipes, although Cakecentral is still my favorite web site!
I just made a cake with the basic wilton buttercream recipe but I used "salted" butter which really made the icing delicious and did not give it that "too sweet" taste.
1/2 cup crisco
1/2 cup butter
2 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons milk
Cream first 3 ingredients, slowly add the powdered sugar. Add the milk last.
Don't forget to keep it refrigerated
Hey ChrisJ...noticed this was your first post, so let me welcome you to Cakecentral! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
Maryanne,
Thanks for the link. I was starting to think I was really weird for putting flour in my buttercream. Nice to know that others use flour in their recipes.
