I absolutely LOVE Bakerella's snowglobe cupcakes. But, I'm worried Coke won't have the round coke bottles this year. If not, how can I make snow globe cupcakes? Is there a way to make a globe?

I can't get passed the snow globe part. Is it just blown sugar?

There should be other small bottle candies you can use...I will look and get back to you.

I'm actually wondering about the "globe" part. I found the tutorial. http://www.bakerella.com/snow-globe-coca-cola-cupcakes/ . I don't think the empty ornaments will have a big enough opening. I am leaving now so I can ck Hobby Lobby before my workout to see if they have plastic ones. I know they have glass ones, but not sure about plastic.

I for one have an issue using the glass on a cupcake. If I were to do a snowglobe I would use a mini cupcake as the base of the snowglobe. I would then use a jumbo cupcake turned on it's side as the globe itself. You can decorate any scene you want and you don't have to take the risk of having the glass or wondering if the glass bulbs you find will work. I have found a place called fancyflours.com that has some really cool scenes on rice paper that you could just attach using your buttercream that would look just like a real snowglobe scene.

Good luck!

Its not glass. Its the special short and round coke bottle for the holidays with the neck cut off, so its plastic

The ornaments are available in plastic/acrylic also.

I just think that you shouldn't use the glass or the plastic when it comes to cupcakes unless you can be sure that they would be properly taken care of during the opening process so they don't harm the cupcake in any way and after the cupcake is eaten so no one gets hurt. When making special cakes, cupcakes I try to keep everything edible except for the cupcake liner itself. Just my opinion! Don't shoot the messenger!

I try to make everything edible too, but I can't do blown sugar. It is apparently food safe b/c coke comes in it. I wouldn't use glass b/c I'd be afraid of shards & don't know how you could even cut it if you did use it. And plastic can be cut with a smooth edge if you use a sharp knife or exacto. But I do understand wanting to use all edible, butI really like the look of these cupcakes

Once on Food Network's 'Unwrapped' I saw a woman that did some kind of snow globe cookie I think, using coffee drink lids. The kind of lids that go on those fancy coffee drinks with all the whipped cream on top, or the Icee lids. I saw a pack of the lids in the food service store the other day. Yes, they had a hole in the top, but it didn't take away from the overall look.

Good luck finding what you are looking for.

Barbaranne!! That sounds like the PERFECT solution. No cutting.

I was looking for the lids for a different purpose during the summer, and I think you can get different sizes so a smaller one may be perfect for a full size cupcake.....I also think you can get them with no holes. Now that I think about it, what about those lids for ice cream sundae cups?

Mind is racing now. I'm so happy that dandilion56602 showed us the Bakerella link to the snowglobes in time for the holidays (I thought I had seen everything on her wonderful blog)...and Barbaranne, yours is a no muss/no fuss way to do it!

Once again "I love Cake Central" !!

I'll have to look at my local restaurant supply store. What I've found on the internet is like 1000 for abt $50. I don't want that many sitting around nor to spend $50. I'm wondering though if the opening that would sit on the cupcake would be too big though. I may have to buy my dd an icee to find out.

Or something like this http://www.suitesupply.com/plastic-dome-lid-fits.slosdl12.01.htm#gallery . I may call the company to see if I can find the diameter of the opening

Here's a another source for cups/lids...in fact all kinds of plastic and paper packaging. I've purchased the cupcake containers from them several times. They allow small quantities - not sure if they have a minimum total but they have lots of items useful to "cakers" so it may be easy to meet the minimum.

http://www.plasticcontainercity.com/plastic_cups.htm

Now we have to get out our rulers and measure the tops of the cupcakes!

Well, I have been lucky and Walmart is carrying the round coke bottles. So, I can make the cupcakes, if the lady wants them. My ornament cupcakes last year were $5 each. Just not sure about these. I think on a cake I would charge $5 for a simple fondant character. And each coke bottle is $1.10 including tax.

Any suggestions?

Edited some BAD spelling b/c I was on my phone icon_smile.gif

I purchased a sleeve of 100 dome type lids from Starbucks for a mere $2.00. I was in and out of the store within minutes. I couldn't believe how accomodating they were.

I did see the little round coke bottles at my super Wal Mart here in Tampa so I would figure that all of them should have them. I am glad that you gave the link to make these even though I don't have time right now, it is a good tutorial to save. Hope you find the Coke bottles! thumbs_up.gif

You could go to any Starbucks I assume and just ask to buy a sleeve of them.

If you use the coke bottles factor in the cost...At my Walmart they are selling for $1 a peice! That would certianly up the cost of the cupcake..especialy for something so time consuming and specialized!! icon_biggrin.gif

Do you think $7.50 is reasonable? Too high? Too low?

I have made these the last 3 years using jumbo-sized cupcakes and the plastic ornaments that come in two halves. People like to keep the snowglobe part so I do a gumpaste bottom and seal the globe with royal icing then place on top of the cupcake. Decorations inside are all fondant/gumpaste with chunky sugar sprinkles and white nonparleils.

I like those domes much better than the ones I bought at Starbucks. Where did you purchase them and how much were they? The lids at Starbucks were only 2 cents a piece so you can't beat that if you are doing large quantities but yours are much cuter.

As I think someone mentioned earlier. Walmart is carrying the globe sodas. As far as plastic ornaments, they are available at Michaels or Ben Franklins or other craft stores.......not necessarily food safe though, if it matters.
We are having these (snowglobe cupcakes) for our Christmas Eve get together with my inlaws.

Since I dont usually shop at WM I didnt even know about them til I saw then here. Gosh I love this site !!!! thumbs_up.gif

If you turn the cupcake upside down and frost the top with buttercream with the paper liner still on then how would the person be able to actually eat the buttercream frosting without eating the cupcake liner?

Does everyone remove the liner first? I noticed on the photos they look like they are all still on. I was thinking you could remove the liner and just decorate the base of the cupcake and it would still look just as cute with the lid on it.

You can make the snow globe parts from gelatin sheets  and water balloons they dry like clear thin plastic and last indefinitely. I order my gelatin sheets from  Amazon for about $12 usd. They are perfectagel platinum (230 bloom) sheets
