I have only used the two plate system and want to venture out and use the push ins and the invisible pillars. I think I understand how the push in pillars work, but I'm unclear on the invisible ones.

What's the difference, and which ones do you prefer? Pros and cons?

I appreciate any comments.

I assume you're referencing the Wilton pillars.

I strongly prefer using SPS. You can use the multipiece legs if you want a cake with separations , or the 4" columns if your cake is stacked. SPS works better than Wilton, is quite inexpensive and EASY to use. And sturdy, really sturdy.

what's an invisible pillar? icon_confused.gif

The push in pillars (with tapered legs) are so easy to use. I wish they had had those when I first started out 30 years ago.

Hey Indy,

In the Wilton Wedding Cakes book ( A Romantic Portfolio- 3 layer stacked white cake on front) Page 69, they have "Hidden Pillars" It says they are designed to separate cake tiers slightly and create a floating illusion. Pushed into tiers as dowel rods, they fit onto all white separator plates except Tall Tier. Trimmable, plastic, hollow.

Have you ever used these?

So, you like the tapered pillar push ins huh? I guess you just slide the little caps on first and then push them into your cake? Do you use more than just a single cake circle under the cake they go through?

My first real wedding cake is this Saturday, and the bride says she doesn't care which I use. Either the 2 plate, or single. I like the clean look of the single myself. The cake will have ribbons, and artificial flowers (brides request) and I just want to have as clean a look as possible without more plastic and "unreal" components. Does that make sense?

You are so awesome - I really value your opinions and am impressed with your cake photos. THANKS thumbs_up.gif

OH! Hidden pillars!

I use hidden pillars when I'm going to stuff the space with flowers, to hide the visible part of the pillars. I use the push-in (tapered) pillars for a pillared cake because they are prettier. I view the push-in's as "decorative" and the hidden ones as "construction grade"

I dont' use the little caps, but they do look cute. I only use one single cardboard under all of my cakes that are going to be stacked.

Yes, sorry. I guess if I would call them by the correct name you would know what I was talking about. I get it now. I'm heading to Hobby Lobby or Michaels today to get some HIDDEN pillars...LOL

Thanks again.

Are you a Colts fan? I was born and raised in Indianapolis. Moved to SW MO about 11 years ago, but Indy will always be "home" to me. icon_biggrin.gif

It's funny ... neither hubby or I are big sports fans (he know less about ANY sport than I do!) but it became different when we moved to Indy and it was all taking place right in your own backyard! Plus I admire Peyton Manning for all of the good works he's doing .... millions poured into a children's wing at a local hospital.

My grandson was going to be named John Patrick ... until the Colts won the superbowl and now his name is John Peyton!
