These boards are awesome for working with fondant!
I have a 18" round one but if you scroll down there are rectangle boards, I think I'll get one of those.
They are made out of pressed wood, similar to MDF.
When working with mmf or fondant you won't have to use any Crisco or cornstarch ( other then what you use to knead with), the mmf doesnt stick to the board at all.

The first one on the page is just a cutting board, it's the pizza boards listed after that one that I'm talking about.

I use it every time I do fondant accents, I wish could find one big enough to roll out fondant for covering cakes.
I can even use my xacto knife on it and not worry about cutting the counters or table underneath it.

Just thought I'd share with ya'll, I love it and don't know what I work on if I didnt have it!

Very cool! I use the heavy guage vinyl from Walmart to roll out my fondant for cakes, I have two pieces, when I have a big cake, I use the second piece to carry it over- works great and I never use crisco or cornstarch! I put my Wilton sizing chart underneath so I know how big to roll it. But I will have to check on this for cutting, thanks!

what is this heavy gauge vinyl you are all so find of? what section is it in? I think I should try this.

It is in the fabric section, I think it is mostly to cover chairs and such, but it is with the 'special' fabrics.

I've seen the vinyl used on tv before but never used it myself, I roll the fondant on my rolling pin and then on to the cake.
I might have to try the vinyl though if I ever need to roll out something larger then my rolling pin.
The boards I use just for all the little fondant accents and what not ,strips, cut-outs, figures etc.
I like to sit when I work so I just put it on the table and pull up a stool, it does require a wet rag underneath it so it does'nt slide around but other then that it's perfect.

The board is also good for handeling large cakes when you need to torte them and fill them, I've used it for cakes 12" and larger.

Yeah, it's that stuff that my crabby aunt had her furniture covered with. Oh, how it takes me back to the 1960's! I have an old wooden table in my kitchen, that I use for cakery. I covered the entire table with a huge sheet of the heaviest vinyl WalMart carried, and attached it underneath with about 200 staples and a staple gun. It was the best $12 I could have spend for my work.

Theresa, that's a great idea! I have one counter in my kitchen that's got a permanent sheet of vinyl on it...I just have to remember not to set hot things on that counter, but it's the easiest one to clean and the one I use for measuring ingredients on, besides rolling fondant and cookies and tortillas on it.

I know this is more expensive than vinyl, but the self repairing rotary cutter mats used for quilting is great if you cut with exactos a lot.

wow, only $12, that's great. I will definitely get some. I rarely do fondant but when I do I dread doing large cakes.

So I don't need shortening or cornstarch? really?

You can roll the fondant out on the vinyl and then use any length of PVC pipe in place of the rolling pin to roll the fondant onto the cake. The vinyl and PVC are dirt cheap. icon_smile.gif

Leanne, while the fondant doesn't stick to the vinyl, I do use a generous amount of cornstarch on the vinyl anyway because it makes the fondant roll out much faster and with very little effort.

I too use the large piece of vinyl (got it at Joannes for $4) with the Wilton size mat underneath. Works great, wish I had learned this trick earlier

Ditto on the vinyl. icon_biggrin.gif I have several sizes of it cut here, a small one for little things, a medium one for rolling, and a large one for the big things. I LOVE the stuff. IF you do happen to cut it (which I have not done YET) it is not expensive to replace. You can get it at Joanns too.

My "rolling pin" is a PVC pipe, I have 2 a long one and short one.
I've never had any trouble rolling out large pieces of fondant before but I think I'll give the vinyl a try sometime.
I've seen it used on the cake challenge shows before so monkey see monkey do!

So when you guys roll out small pieces of fondant for stripes, cutouts and what not what do you roll it out on?

That's what I use the board for, I've seen the Wilton cut and roll mat but since I use a xacto knife I was always worried about cutting it, does the vinyl stand up to a xacto knife also?

I have found that the cutting mats in the dollar store in the scrapbooking section work great for me. My exacto knife or other cutters don't harm it and fondant doesn't stick. And it only cost $1. The size is 17" x 20".

I roll everything out on vinyl. I have a huge sheet that goes over my work table and smaller pieces for when I do smaller work if I want to work somewhere other than the fondant table.

Yes, the thickest gauge vinyl stands up superbly to an X-Acto knife. Like the other poster said, I keep my Wilton Roll n Cut mat under the vinyl so I can use the gridlines on the mat and not worry about X-Acto damage.
