Fondant turning green!!

I hope I chose the right forum to post this on.....
I have been coloring fondant for quite awhile now, and have never had this happen before. I already had some fondant colored black, and wanted to make more. I used a small ball of new fondant and added the black coloring (Wilton)
When I had made enough, I put this newly colored fordant in with what was already made. I cut and applied strips of this fondant onto the cake I was working on, and I noticed that the black was starting to look like a dark Army green!!
The longer it sat on the cake and in the baggie, the greener it got.....I tried to make more with new fondant, and it turned green immediately.....No matter how many times I tried after that, it did the same thing. What is going on? I have to make some black fondant for a Halloween cake this week, so I bought new coloring to use. Anyone have an idea why this happened? TIA! Brownie

I haven't had this happen with fondant, but I did have it happen with buttercream when I added lemon extract to the buttercream for flavor. Never could get it black, but was the best deep green I have EVER made. Not sure that helps, but I'm sure someone will have an accurate answer for you.

BTW, a BIG THANK YOU to Specialist Matthew Spencer, and all the other men and women of the Armed forces and their families for the sacrifices for our freedom!!!

I have tried making a small batch of black with the wilton coloring and it looked really deep purple. I tried to make gray and it kinda looked lavendar..... icon_confused.gif

Try the Americolor black instead or precolored fondant.

Oh no! I'm just about to go color my fondant black for a spider cake I'm making for Halloween and I'm using Wilton color paste. I hope mine turns out good and not green like yours. I was told to color my fondant brown before putting in the black. Did you do that as well?

I've had this happen when I used black wilton just to make a marble effect on my cake board. It was mostly white with just a little of the black in it. As it dried it started to turn green, and the next day it even spread to the white. It was aweful! I hadn't ever had it happen before and I haven't had it happen since, but... who knows. I rarely use Wilton ANYTHING unless I run out of something that I can't get around here, then that is the only choice I have.

Wilton's black is made out of green and purple. The purple fades out and what's left is green.

Americolor's super black is the way to go. If you can't get it though, starting with chocolate fondant will make your black stay black.

Your only variable is the fondant. Are you making your own? If so have any of the ingredients changed? I colored some gelatin (for bows) with a dark purple (Americolor) and when the color hit the geletin it turned blue. In other words the red disappeared completely from the purple. Maybe a Ph thing.

Thanks everyone!

No, I have not tried using some brown first, then doing the black. I will try that, and if it still turns out weird, I will see if I can get the Americolor, or get fondant already colored!

I must admit it was kind of funny to see the color change literally in front of my eyes. icon_surprised.gif However, I have to have black for this cake coming up, so now it's not so funny......

BTW....My son was just home on leave from Iraq with his finance....They were married while here! They are in the same troop, and stationed at Camp Taji. It means the world to us when people take the time to tell him thank you....We have to get through the next five months, then they come home for good! thumbs_up.gif

What makes no sense to me is the fact that I used the same jar of coloring, and fondant from the same box (I use Wilton Fondant for decorations), and the week before, had no problems getting it to go black, and stay that way.....
