Hi to all,

I was just wondering if there was an expiration date on boxed cake mixes? I was cleaning out the pantry the other day and found some older cake mixes behind my new cake mixes. I think they are about 12-14 months old and I hate to throw them out if they are still good. I couldn't find an expiration date anywhere on them.

Thanks, Janice

I'm not at home to check any of my boxes .. I would think that legally they'd have to put some sort of expiration date on them. Do they have a customer service telephone number you could call anywhere on the box?

you can call the number on the box and then give them a code that is on the bottom or top of the cake mix box. They will then tell you if it is good or not.
Just ask my husband...I always call about everything!!! I do not like to eat bad things, I am sure no one does. Most would probably just throw it out, but if I bought it, I want to use it!!!

Why can't they just put the date on the box like they do with so many other products? This is something that has always bothered me.

I don't know for sure how long they have been doing it, but I have DH and Pillsbury that have expiration dates on their boxes! It has been my experience that most things are still good after that expiration date, but if you are really concerned, don't use it! Janice

Well would you believe that they don't put expiration boxes on the ones they sell in Canada, geesh! You just cannot tell how old they are and sometimes when they go on sale, you really wonder!

Mjmil7; I have an information sheet on this if you'd like to have it. I received it from our cake decorating instructor.

When I make box cakes I use Betty Crocker only. There are always expiration dates on the boxes. I have used some past their expiration date and they tasted great.

I use Duncan Hines, the shelf life is 2 years, new mixes have expiration dates. the older mixes had a code stamped on the box the first number would be the year the mix was made and the next 3 would be the number of days of the year. ex. 5001 would mean made january 1 2005. this mix would expire jan 1 2007. hope this helps.

My wilton instructor told us that she dosen't usually like to throw away cake mixes either, and will add a little meringue powder to help them to rise. Just a thought if you decide to use it!

I was so worried after reading this topic that I ran upstairs to check it out. Whew!! All of mine still have months to go! I was really worried. I think that I'd die if I made a cake that was out of it's date. Thanks alot for warning me. I usually check on everything else, but it never occurred to me to check the cake mix! Duh!!!
