I've never used fondant on top of cupcakes before, but I might need to for a bridal shower, so I have a few questions. Most likely I would use Jennifer Dontz recipe for chocolate fondant, but may go with marshmallow fondant.

1. How far in advance can you cut out the rounds if you store in an airtight container?

2. Can you decorate the rounds before you put them on the cupcakes?

3. Does the fondant go directly on top of the cupcake, or is there a layer of buttercream first?

4. If no buttercream, do you put them on when the cupcakes come out of the oven (like with the cookies) or wait for them to cool?

5. Can I make the rounds, pack them in an airtight container and ship them to a friend to assemble the cupcakes? (I live 7 hours from the shower location, so the cupcakes would never survive the trip, and if I do attend the shower, I'l be getting there just as it starts.)

Thank you so much for you help with this!!

I can't answer all of it, because I've never made them ahead of time...

Anyhow, put the circles on cooled cupcakes. And I use a smear of buttercream under the fondant, not a full coating, but just enough to glue the fondant on.

I am interested in hearing the answers as well. I have never tried fondant on cupcakes but would like to.

1. How far in advance can you cut out the rounds if you store in an airtight container?

If you're going to store them, I would cut each circle, lay several in a row onto plastic wrap and then seal with more wrap on top. I think even sitting in a plastic container they would firm up some.

2. Can you decorate the rounds before you put them on the cupcakes?

You can decorate with imprints I would say, but not much with icing. You kind of have to gently push the fondant on/around the top of the cc when you adhere it.

3. Does the fondant go directly on top of the cupcake, or is there a layer of buttercream first?

I do a thin layer of bc.

4. If no buttercream, do you put them on when the cupcakes come out of the oven (like with the cookies) or wait for them to cool?

I've never tried putting it on when warm. I've done it for cookies and it works really well...has a good seal/stick.

5. Can I make the rounds, pack them in an airtight container and ship them to a friend to assemble the cupcakes? (I live 7 hours from the shower location, so the cupcakes would never survive the trip, and if I do attend the shower, I'l be getting there just as it starts.)

I guess you can, like I said though, seal them in plastic wrap to stay soft before you put them on the cc.

I tend to make my fondant cupcakes a little domed and use a lot of buttercream. I use a round cutter bigger than the cupcake and kinda form it around into a little dome and decorate. I love the look of fondant but you can't beat biting into buttercream.
