I've seen alot of the Kit Kat cakes (candy barrels) on here and I just love them! I was wondering if anyone could tell me how to make one? Do you just make a regular 8" round and stick the Kit Kats to the side? Thanks. icon_biggrin.gif

That's how I do it. I make a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and then stick the kitkats in the icing on the side. It is a very easy cake to make...no need to worry about how smooth your icing is!

There's a picture of mine in my photos, it was so easy and got such rave reviews, I have made them on several occasions now. I use 1 full 2 in layer, torted and filled, then iced the outside and the kit kats were the perfect height to just come up around the edge and "hold the candy".

Also I don't put gobs and gobs of candy on there, I did a layer of M&M's then sprinkled on another to fill in spaces and then I used mini m&m's to fill in any space still remaining. I am also a little obsessive compulsive and I tried to have the logo's facing down, but that's just me.

Tie a ribbon around the whole thing and pipe a top and bottom border to finish (1 more thing I use BetterCream on these, it's a whipped cream type frosting and cuts the crazy sweetness of candy on buttercream.

Good Luck and have fun! Andrea

Do you know how many kit kats did you use? Just wondering. Thanks!

I just did an 8" kitkat cake and it took 10 regular size kitkats (4 sticks to a bar) to go around the whole thing. If you are selling this kind of cake make sure to cover the candy costs...they can make the costs high. I also do not pour a whole bag of m&m's or reeses on the top...just enough to cover it.

Thanks for the info. Wento the store and forgot to buy the kit kats! Now I've got a note written for tomorrow. I'll either do an 8" or a 6". May go with 8. Thinking of doing the halloween m&ms with a halloween ribbon.

Thanks for the tips! So do I need a 2 layer 8 inch if I'm not torting? Also do you break apart the Kit Kats individually?

andpotts- Your cake looks so yummy. I would love to know how you did the cookie layer. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks again! My daughter wants one of these cakes for her birthday in 2 weeks and I really hope to make a nice one!

I've done a similar one with pirouette cookies. I just iced it in my normal BC, placed the pirouettes, and I put a large ribbon around it to ensure they would stay attached.

Can I hijack the thread and ask if this cake is difficult to cut? The candy doesnt want to fall all over, right? Do you peel off the KitKats before cutting?

I'm guessing that you peel before you cut - otherwise I think it's going to get messy fast.

I have not made the Kit Kat one, but I have done the pirouette cookie one (in my photos). Didn't peel off the ccokies before cutting...just cut between the cookies. I assume you'd do the same with the Kit Kats, no?

FYI if you do a 6" cake, it takes 8 packs of kit kats to perfectly fit around the cake if you break them into sections of 2. HTH

I used pirouettes but they are quite tall. I used a 10" 3 layer cake. I covered in ganache and then just stuck the pirouettes on but next time for a cheaper route, I want to try a buttercream cake and kit kats!

I am thinking of making one of these for an upcoming fall event. Has anyone ever had a problem with the chocolate melting onto the fall ribbon? I think this cake is so cute and would be perfect! TIA for anyone's advice! icon_smile.gif

I did the pirouette cookies. When I took off the ribbon to cut the cake, the cookies did fall over, break, etc., even though they were stuck to the buttercream. In future, I would remove them a few at a time before cutting each slice.

I was hoping that andpotts would share with us how she did her cake with the pb cookie also. So far no luck with hearing from her. I even pm'd her and no response. I hope that she checks back and lets us know how to do this cake because I would certainly love to try this cake as it looks so good in her photos.

Ok here goes, if I left anything out or made this confusing let me know and I will try to help!

This is the most fun suprise filling, you bake a cookie in the same size cake pan you use for the cake and then use any fruit filling or bc /mouse on top and under the cookie, the flavor possibilities are endless!

I use the Betty Crocker pre packaged cookie mix . 1 Package makes a 10 - 12" layer.

For the candy barrel I bake and tort 1 single layer using the cookie layer in the middle and its the perfect size.

Using the same size cake pan used for the cake ensures you cookie size is correct and there is nothing that needs to be trimmed, I prep the pan with cake release and then pat the dough in leaving a little space all around the edge so it can expand when it bakes. The edges of mine tend to rise a little higher than the middle, but I just press the cookie down as level as possible when I take it out of the oven warm and I havent had a problem.

The cookie softens inside the cake so I bake it a little crunchy so it won't get too soft from being in the cake.

Put whatever icing/filling you are using between cookie and cake to hold it in place, I choose to use BETTERcream (it is a whipped cream type frosting) because it is far less sweet than buttercream and adding the cookie already takes your sweetness level all the way up. Buttercream is fine to use though.

The order of layers is:
~~~~~
Cake
~~~~
BetterCream and or jam or mouse or sleeve filling
~~~~~
Cookie
~~~~~~
BetterCream and or jam or mouse or sleeve filling
~~~~~~~
Cake
~~~~~~

Some combo ideas I have done:
Chocolate Cake --PB CookieChocolate Mouse
Chocolate Cake Chocolate Chip CookieRaspberry Mouse
Lemon Cake-Sugar Cookie-Raspberry Mouse
Chocolate Cake-Chocolate Cookie- Raspberry & Cream Filling

Hope that helps everyone, this is one of the coolest things I learned how to do here! Andrea
