I need gray fondant for a Dallas cowboy helmet cake I am making for my son's birthday on Sun.. I used black wilton gel thinking it would make the fondant gray but it made it a weird purple color. I looked at walmart and Michael's but neither of them carried a gray gel color for icing. I also so need a navy blue so any suggestions for that would be great. THANKS.
Add a tiny bit of yellow, that should balance out the purple.
Navy is made by mixing sky blue and violet. It will come out periwinkle at first, but if you add enough of each, it will become navy (periwinkle is the pastel version of navy).
That's weird, I used the Wilton black mixed w/ white MMF to make the gray cat I just posted, and it worked fine.
I've made navy using Wilton blue, a little black, a little purple...
Color a small blob of fondant black. Then, take a piece of the black and knead it into your white fondant to make grey.

That cake is so adorable!! Do you mind me asking what clay gun you used? I tried one brand and it was so small and everything stuck in it.
hi...i've learned that it was easier for me to make dark colors by first using chocolate fondant. it helps with black and navy....for me anyways!
Thanks so much, sweet-thing...I used the Makin's Ultimate, which I love: http://www.makinsclay.com/US/eng/products/ultimate.htm
I've made gray fondant quite successfully using just a little bit of Americolor black. Then I painted it with a silvery lustre dust which really looked cool. I got wonderful advice here about making the deep true navy blue, and that was to keep adding and adding and adding the royal blue. I couldn't believe how much it took, but i fianlly got the right color!
Thanks all for the great advice.
Flour pots you must also have ESP because I was wondering where to get a clay extruder/gun and you answered all my questions including the one I didn't ask!
Actually, mine was purchased from here: http://www.theclaystore.com/pages-productinfo-category-97-product-745/makins-professional-ultimate-clay-extruder.html
I posted the other link because I thought the product photo was better.
I've read that you can buy it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby (and use their weekly coupon too), but I'm not sure if that's still the case.
