Need help about how to make fondant 3D people!

I have a cake coming up this month in which I must make 3 football players, one laying down and the other 2 standing up. I have never made 3D people and need some tips/advice. I know artistically I can do it but I dont know the technique or method.

When making a person who is standing up, do I need to start with some sort of wire support system and build the fondant around that?

Do I make the body in several different parts and put them together?

How do I do the uniform? Do I make the body and them somehow make a uniform on it or do I make each piece the color of the uniform I want?

If anyone knows of a tutorial video online or instructions I would love it. I have looked and can find nothing!
