i tried to mix luster dust with vodka last night to paint on a cake, but the consistency i got was very strange and it took a lot of work to get it to look right. seems like maybe i used too much vodka?

does anyone know the best way to mix the powdered colors to get it to the right consistency?

I have used the gel colors in everclear and it worked, but the gel color seemed to become gritty and the color was not as vibrant as I had hoped and the mixture a bit thin. Also the brown color I was using went on green and then dried to a brown (I almost had a heart attack the first time!) Does the corn syurp help prevent the grittiness?

Airbrush colors mixed with everclear work like crazy. They are developed to be liquid. No worries.

Can you use Wilton's concentrated paint mixed with Vodka to paint as well? Or can it only be gel?

Does anyone know if I hand paint tree branches on fondant, if the color will run once the cake is set out for presentation and comes to room temperature?

Thanks so much for all the info. Now can I ask what type brushes to use. I have not had much success with painting on fondant and I am wondering if part of my problem is the brushes I am using. Thanks in advance.

I use clear vanilla extract, but you can use any type of alcohol-based liquid (e.g. vodka, lemon extract) I just generally always have clear vanilla extract on hand...where I'm not a drinker, so I don't generally have alcohol in my house. So the vanilla is just a matter of convenience.

AYes, kids can eat fondant that has been painted with vodka/food color mixture. The alcohol all evaporates out.

I am new to all this and have managed to use lustre dust and alcohol to paint on my gum paste but when the alcohol evaporates the lustre dust turns back to powder. This wouldn't normally be a problem but unfortunately it comes off on your fingers if you handle it, not good if you've painted black. Can anyone help?????

You can use piping gel instead of vodka. It works as a good medium for the gel paints. :)

Yes. You can thin it with lemon extract or vodka. The more you add the more diluted it is. Just add a little at time until you get the consistency you like

Those little eye droppers you can buy for extract bottles are nice for adding alcohol by the drop.

Thank you everyone - I have read through this as a friend just asked me to do a cake that will need me to paint on the fondant (going to try and make a pair of jeans) and this thread was so helpful, I have not done this technique before so will do a practice run in a couple of days.

Cheers
