How can I make my icing very red?!

I'm making a big cake for a birthday party tomorrow, I'm mixing my red frosting and it's like a pinky red, I used all of my No-Taste Red and I still have christmas red left and a bunch of other colors... Can anyone help me to get red icing, really red? *I also added a touch of black and it made it look worse tapedshut.gif

Don't use Christmas red, it will make it taste really bad. Your icing will turn red after it sits on the cake for a while. Red NEVER looks red in the bowl, it turns darker after it dries a bit on the cake.

Adding black will make it lean more towards maroon in color.

BTDT! I agree with letting it sit for a bit. The first time I tried to do a red frosting, I must have tried 3-4 batches! Poor DH had to run to Michaels 3 times to get me more red color! (He now hates it when I say the word "red frosting") lol

Americolor Super Red is the best for getting a real red. Christmas red is actually lighter than No Taste Red. Wilton does make a "Red Red" that is a little better if you can find it. Americolor works best though with a lot less coloring. If you can't get that for now though, use your "No Taste Red" and let it set for a while, like they said. That and black do get darker as they sit.

It's too late now, but for next time, start out with pink or orange frosting, then add your red. It will colour much quicker and takes a lot less colouring to get it red that way. HTH!

It wont help you now but order some chefmaster liqua gel colors. They are concentrated so it takes very little. You don't have to wait for the color to intensify (immediate red or black), no adding other colors to achieve your results and no bad taste. If you can't find it you can order it from Dixie's Icing in Omaha, NE
