I was going to use MMF for a rope on a western cake, but it kept breaking. I never got it to work.

Same thing on a loop bow. But it didn't break until after it was dry and ready to be used!

I tried using Crisco to make it more pliable, and every other trick I've heard of, but I finally gave up.

You could mix equal parts of gumpaste/mmf, it makes it more pliable to work with and it adds strength as it dries.

I agree, but I've also used tylose powder when I had no gumpaste on hand.

I use MMF for all my accents and find that it needs to be very warm when I'm doing something like ropes. I just put it in the microwave for a few seconds at a time to heat it up. Then it's easier to use and won't break.
