I have noticed that I keep getting warnings when I am on cake central that my computer is infected with a virus. I know its not because, because I use a bunch of different programs. Anyway, to fix this, I have downloaded the Firefox web browser (just like Internet explorer, only better).
There is a great feature called "Ad block plus" that removes any ads from the website you are at.
On CC it makes the pages a little weird, but on most sites it does not affect the layout.
Best of all it is free and I have had no treats when Ad Blocker Plus is enabled.

blocking the ads denies CC of its primary source of income that keeps the site free for the majority of users.
I used to do that to: FireFox + ABP and still do for all sites except CC.
On CC, I figure the monthly fee for getting it ad free and keeping it up and running is well worth the cost, which after all amounts to 5 less candy bars a month that certainly do not need to go to the gut!

as for the virus warning -- what is generating it? your antivirus? or is it just popping up seemingly out of no where?
If not from your antivirus and seemingly out of no where, then there is a high probability of something bad lurking in you machine.
I keep getting a virus warning too...I'm using Outpost Security Suite and every now and then it gives me a warning. It doesn't do it on any other websites, just on CC. I also don't get any ads when using Outpost.

Then you have something different going on. This is just an ad that redirects the webpage and then opens a pop up. All you have to do is close the browser tab.
There is no actual virus on CC, just a crappy ad that just showed up in that last two days. If you were getting this before two days ago, it may be something else not related.

Yesterday I disabled my adblock to see if I preferred the set up that way. Is that why I now have issues with Virus Doctor, or is that another problem? I put the adblock back for this website and am trying to keep my computer from freezing up all the time. Two year old computer and first issue ever.
I was having some severe problems. Had to shut down 8 or 10 times a day. My son (a computer tech-geek) came over and did a virus clean up last week and I've not had a problem since.
I think if it was from CC, I would have gotten the problem back, since I just LIVE in this site on a daily basis! 
I know that CC gets money from the ads. I am not trying to hurt them in anyway...but in the same matter, I deserve to protect my privacy and computer from potential viruses.
I don't click on ads (I only go to GSA, and that is book marked). So CC doesn't make money off me anyway, in those terms.
Yes, its only 5 candy bars a month, but right now I don't have a job (recent graduate + poor economy) and can't afford it.
As for the "virus software" what happens is I click on a CC photo, and the page will take longer to load, then in my browser shows a screen pop up like I am looking in my "control panel" and things are being scanned saying my computer is at risk.
I have no respect for companies that try to live off the fear of people, therefore taking advantage of them.
As for getting rid of the "virus ad" I use tabs in my Firefox, and just X out of all the tabs and restarted Firefox. I realized it wasn't MY virus scans (I know a decent amount about computers) and I know how pathetic companies try to take advantage of people. I ran my virus scans, and ad-ware/mal ware and came up with nothing

Heath, I see you are trying to track it down and I really appreciate it. When I have my ad-blocker on the site looks really plain and you have to scroll lots more. I would prefer to keep ad-blocker off because I like the layout more, but till we get it figured out... its staying on.

I have quite a bit of protection on my pc, last time I was on CC and had another tab open to wal-mart I got a virus notification and said to abort connection, which I did. Tonight, I ran web root spy sweeper, I had a virus....first one in several years. The virus was called mal/generic-A. I just added another program to help detect malware. I don't know which site it was, but one or the other has been compromised.

Wherever this rootscan thing is coming from, it is all over the internet right now. Its not specific to cakecentral, there are people on forums all over the internet complaining about it.
Unfortunately no one seems to know where it is coming from, no ad network has been identified, or a particular originating website.
Still trying to figure out if there is something we can do on our end, or if it is completely outside our control.....
In that case Heath, could you make a post to the CCs about it and encourage them to just X out of the browser. Then if they are concerned, to run their own virus scan?
I haven't gotten anything like that in a very long time (over a year). I had virtually no virus protection at the time (I know, bad me!). A computer friend of mind told me about Avast Antivirus. It's a free antivirus and since I put it on (over a year ago), I have had not problems with viruses. It occastionally will find/detect one, but it deletes it on it's own. I won't post the site, since I"m not sure if I'm allowed to, but just search Avast Antivirus and you'll find it. The Home version is free, you just have to register it once a year (also free).
Once you download it and install it, it will ask to reboot your computer. Once it reboots, it will do a full system scan for viruses. This can take anywhere from a half hour to who knows how long, depending on the speed of your computer. If it finds any viruses during the scan, it will ask you what you want to do with it: quarantine, delete, etc.

Avast is a good one. The reason you can't get rid of some viruses is that they stick themselves into the files that windows needs in order to run, then the viruses can't be deleted while windows is running. Avast will do a scan at boot up, before Windows starts, and it can get rid of the stubborn ones that way.
I'm not using Avast lately, switched to something that would block ads too, but I turned it off the other day so my husband could download from youtube, and we got one of those fake virus scan popups, which he thought was legit and clicked on...a system restore was all it took to fix our computer...after he panicked for a few hours before telling me there was a problem

in the case of the popups a virus program won't help (unless it has a pop up blocking feature.
For this instance, we have established it it just a pop and shouldnt be harmful to your computer.
So if you ran your virus scan, and no viruses are detected, great! But it will not stop pop up!

pop up blockers are different from ad blockers...
pop up blockers prevent new windows from opening
ad blockers prevent ads from popping up or being shown on web pages.
