I am trying to start my own business. I have been doing about 2-4 cakes a week. And its going well. the problem is, I want to have a legal business and can't do that out of my house. I don;t have the money to buy a place. So I went in to a bakery on the corner to get a box for a cake I made. He recognized me from last time I needed a box, and we started talking. He wants to get together so we can talk about a business proposition. (his kids go to my sons school, where i am the PTA VP so he knows me, I don't really know him). His bakery is just simple birthday cakes and cookies, dabishes and the sorts. He would love to offer more, and specialty cakes. What is the best way to go about this? Should I rent space from him? Should i work for him (i dont't really want that) Should he advertise and pay me to make these cakes, and if so, what percentage...
I am so confused.
Any help in this matter would be great.
thanks

You might consider renting his kitchen for "baking time." And perhaps consider letting him advertise and take orders for your cakes, etc. Then you could allow him a percentage of each cake you'd sold through him, etc.

This could possibly be an advantageous agreement for the both of you; He gets extra customers coming into his business because of your lovely tasty cakes, and you get exposure for the future!

Perhaps he could "feature" your products. IE, "Bobs bakery featuring Chefperl products..." On all the signs, cards, etc. That would definitely get your name going.

I agree, make sure you keep your name and that you are getting it out there. I would rent space through him. He gets that extra money and the customers coming in to see your stuff will see his as well. Plus once you are legal you can also do your own advertising. You don't want to have to share profits on things/people you are bringing in yourself. Sounds like a great opportunity though. good luck!
