I was hoping that some of you geniuses might be willing to help me out with my stepson's 8th birthday cake. I am wanting to do a football cake, but as many cakes as I have made I have never dealt with fondant and I am wanting to try it for this cake. Can you give me some pointers...what do I need as far as tools, etc? I have the Wilton guide, but nothing matches good old fashioned experience! Also, how do I do the "grass effect"? I will be forever grateful!! icon_biggrin.gif

Are you makeing a football field? I'm thinking of makeing a football helmet in oct for my hubby's bday. For tools i say rolling pin and pizza cutter, for cuting off your exses fondant these are my favs. you can also use a knife non serated. pointers make shure your buttercream is smooth b/4 you place your fondant on the cake to prevent lumps.and use a fondant paddle or your hands to smooth your fondant on your cake. For grass i would use buttercream. Hope this helps. Cant wait to see your cake HAPPYCAKEING!!!!!!

Smooth your buttercream with a paper towel (Viva) before placing the fondant on, and make sure the cake is chilled well. It helped me to smooth the ends of the football first, then smooth down the sides. If you want a football the same size as the real thing, I would bake 2 layers in a 12 inch square pan, cut each in half, then stack them all on top of eachother to carve. This is what I did anyway, and it turned out to be almost exactly the same size as the football I was using as a model. To get the texture, you can use a cheap paper towel to imprint your fondant while it's still really soft. For grass, I would just use buttercream and the grass tip (not sure what number, but it's the one with all the tiny little holes in it). I hope this helps! I just did a football cake, and it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be (in my pics)! Good luck icon_smile.gif
