Seriously, I laughed out loud and said, "Do you know how many DAYS it takes to make a cake like that?" I gave him the name of a very expensive bakery and suggested he try them, although I doubted they could do it, either. He said in a little puppy dog voice, "I already tried them. They said they needed more notice."

Wife had told her DH to order a 2-tier white cake with cookies and cream filling, chocolate ganache frosting and vanilla fondant. Decorations was to be Disney's Sleeping Beauty and her forest animal friends.
She heaved a sighed when she heard what her DH ordered:
2 chocolate sponge cakes, both filled with mangoes & cream, covered in chocolate ganache and chocolate fondant. Decorations were to be a sleeping baby on one cake and turtles, deer, rabbits, eagles, tigers and mice on the other. Oh and maybe a bear too, he wasn't sure.
Tigers, mice, bears, eagles & turtles...never saw that on my dvd of Sleeping Beauty!

I absolutely do love men. 
I was asked for a Tractor Pig cake. The child in question was unable to enlighten me as to exactly what a tractor pig was, nor was his mother. Luckily she was pretty relaxed about it & said anything featuring any combination of tractors/pigs would be fine! ( I made a tractor with a piggy face on the front & little pig sitting next to it)
I will barter for something I really want...once got 2 very good seats to an Astro's game for a small, simple wedding cake. When we got seated I looked over to the left and saw Pres Bush #1 and Barbara surrounded by their "agents". VERY good seats. I didn't even care when we lost!

I had a very traditional bride with a biker groom wanting a traditional cake to serve at the reception, no grooms cake. He is thinking traditional biker and she is thinking white elegant. They went with black fondant, flame draping, and flame roses with a Harley topper. I get a call as I am leaving to deliver about a change in venue due to weather. I showed up at the ritziest hotel in town done to the hilt in traditional "WHITE" elegance. The cake stood out like a sore thumb. Groom was estatic, bride smiled and loved it quietly. MOB cried and cried.
My crazy was not nearly as entertaining as these.
It was just not attractive. Bright pink and blue alternating tiers with pink and blue silk flowers for a wedding cake. It just screamed baby shower to me but it is what the bride wanted.
These requests have had me laughing so hard!

I forgot to mention that he only wanted a cake for about 10 people - so he felt $3 a serving was reasonable for his request! 
Even after I told him that I couldn't do it, he kept pushing for a price - so I told him that Duff has a minimum of $1000, so that was what he was probably looking at. 
Looking back on the conversation, I'm not sure if he was a real customer, or a competitor trying to get prices from me...

The weirdest request that I ever got was from my then 6-yr-old son for his birthday. He wanted a Ferrari sitting on the side of the road with a monster truck crushing it. With nobody in the Ferrari. At least he was thinking about the safety of the driver...
Or the one from my daughter when she was 6 or 7. She wanted the picture of the Spongebob "chocolate with nuts" episode where they're selling chocolate bars to an old lady fish and her withered up mother. She wanted the two old lady fish on the cake yelling at each other about chocolate bars. Nobody could figure out why she chose that particular scene, but it's what she got on her cake.

Their cats were also sitting on the lilypads, watching them go down. They said that the entire wedding-planning process had made them feel like they were going under, so why not put it on the cake!

Ha, I think it says more about their families! Her mother was a really traditional Korean lady, and she was NOT happy with their cake design! The couple themselves had a really good sense of humor (you'd have to, with a cake like that), and when I was setting it up one of their friends saw it and said that it was totally them.

This is so weird! I hear stuff like this all the time. Why do people think that being a cake artist is not a real profession? Do they think that we are all a bunch of 13 year olds that have nothing better to do with our lives?
I have also had people ask if I would decorate their cakes that have been baked by their mom or step-sister. Do they really think that is going to make the price cheeper? Most of what I charge for my cakes is the decoration. My dad is a builder and he says it's the same thing. A house costs x amount of dollars to build, but what you finish it with is where the price can go up or WAY up. People understand this when building a house. There is something about cake that makes people loose their brains when it comes to getting what you pay for.
A cake is just sugar and eggs.

I had one lady call and she got my educational speech on why styro's were not cheaper. She said, "Well, I figured you bought them in bulk." I said, "I also buy my cake ingredients in bulk, and if I were to buy styro's in bulk, I'd have to buy something like 2000. And buying 2000 pieces of styrofoam when I only need 5 for your display cake is not really a profitable decision."
