I was searching for ideas for pirate cookies and stumbled on someone's Etsy page and they were selling their cookies on there? They had other candies and goodies too. Just never thought you could sell food on there...wondering if anyone has sold their products on Etsy.

What is Etsy?

I've been on there but didn't know regular folk like us could sell there, what do they do take a % of what you sell?

You can sell on Etsy. Read the rules and sign up. There is a $0.20 per item listing fee and then Etsy takes a percentage of the sale. You can also sell at Artfire.com It's a good, up-and-coming site for selling handcrafted items, but Artfire doesn't have the traffic that Etsy does. I sell hand-dyed yarn and wool for spinning on both sites.

Anyway. I haven't listed any baked items, but I am very tempted to. I have made some very good tasting gluten-free cookies. I just need to get better at decorating them before listing them for sell.

I, too, am interested in hearing how others are doing wtih sales on Etsy and other handcrafted selling sites.

This person was selling groups of iced sugar cookies. She had a pirate set and other sets. I'm going to go back on and see if anyone else on there does baked goods and how they ship them...I'll let you all know what I find out...

Went back on to see the prices and most people were selling a dozen for $45 plus extra for shipping...the cookies were gorgeous and perfectly done but wow...$45..

One of the sellers I saw (don't remember who) was selling quite a few at the $45 per dozen range. They were gorgeous, but, yeah, 'Wow!' was my reaction, too.

Does anyone know if this falls under any sort of food products laws & the HD? ie: can you do this if you are not 'legal' in your state?

cakebox is the one i saw on there...her work is outstanding but the prices are high....

You are supposed to comply with your local food service laws to sell your baked goods on Etsy. I don't suppose you HAVE to, but if you don't and someone gets sick and reports you and it comes back that you're not licensed and all that... *shrug*

I listed on Etsy for a while. I did get a few enquiries, but no actual orders, so I let it lapse.

I LOVE etsy! The premise of the site is home-made so I do think most buyers are aware of what they are getting. I think it is just a matter of the laws. I know that I can have a homebased business in nyc but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that those laws don't apply to the internet. Defintely something to investigate as I think many of you would do well with a shop on etsy.

Interstate food sales go into a whole 'nuther realm of regulations. Some of the people I've worked for would not cross the state line with deliveries. This was back 20 years ago but my guess would be it has gotten more complicated rather than less.
