I have to make a bride for a bridal shower cake. I looked through the gallery and saw all of the beautiful work everyone has done. My question was where do you find the veil to put on the doll? I have looked at Michaels and ACmoore. I wasn't sure if you create your own? Thank you.
Never made a doll cake, but I have made bridal veils. I looked at the pics and it appears to me that the veil is made of "Bridal illusion" or "Tulle" (pronounced tool) which can be purchased by the inch or yard, at most fabric stores. It's cheap. You can add pearls, silk flowers, etc. I would hot glue it since that will peel off easily. (But don't start her on fire!!!)
OR--skip the doll pick and go and buy a Bride Barbie doll. Then you get the doll, the veil and the flowers (I believe she has a ring on, too!).
I exclusively use dolls for my doll cakes and not the pick. Of course, I'm usually making them for little girls and I can't imagine how dissappointed they would be if you pull out HALF a Barbie doll!! lol!!
Then only realy "trick" to using a whole doll instead of a pick is to wrap her bottom half in plastic wrap and then stick her in the cake only to about mid-hip level. If you put her in further, when you start decorating, he waist will dissappear under the icing and she will look very short waisted. (I learned this the hard way!) Also, if you try and stick her in all the way to the waist, her hips will crack the cake. Apparently when they re-did Barbie to give her a more "normal" appearance, they made her butt bigger! lol!!

I made a Christmas bride I have posted in my photos and all I did for the veil was use a small piece of tulle. They sale it at Wal-Mart. If you have any lace material, that will work as well. All I did was attached it with a small rubber band, then decorated it with a little frosting to hide the band. I used a doll pic in mine. Hope this helps.

haha, well Lisa, I use an empty paper towel roll that I cover with Saran Wrap and I stick her inside that, up to the hips or so. Never had a cake crack and it makes it easy to remove to and secure. First you use a paper towel roll, covered on the outside, to core the cake, then a fresh one, covere again on the outside to house Barbie. That way the actual paper towel roll never touches the cake that will be eaten. Anyway, you are right, she used to fit a lot easier in it, but still can be fit and it works really well.
I am not a fan of doll picks either.
