Wilton's has a fairly comparable whipped icing (A powder mix in a box) that was pretty good actually although the price was about the same.
I have also heard that you can buy large tubs (5 lbs of I remember correctly) at Sam's of an icing that is like Bettercreme. Not sure if this still applies as I do not shop at Sam's.

But maybe look around your area for different places to buy your Bettercreme, in my area it ranges from $3.99 at GFS to $6.99 at Independent cake supply stores!!!
Huge difference in the price of that alone!

I LOVE Bettercreme, my only problem is getting the nice smooth finish I desire.

I was wondering about that myself, someone will brainstorm it sooner or later.

Those are not mock betttercreme recipes, despite their description. They all have dairy in them, and therefore are not room-temperature stable for extended periods, the way bettercreme is.

Check with your local grocery stores that use a whipped type of icing, some used bettercreme and others use similar products.

Jan H............................... those sound good even though there are dairy in them. It probably doesn't have that sickening sweet taste as most buttercreams do. Thanks

My local cake supply store carries Whip 'n Ice which is similar to the Bettercreme but it actually tastes a little better than the Bettercreme. I buy it in liquid form; the secret to getting it smooth (if you are using the liquid stuff) is to beat it low and slow. If you beat it too fast it gets too much air in it and it gets dry and full of air bubbles. If that happens you can simply add more liquid Whip 'n Ice. There have been times where I beat it too dry and didn't have any more and I used non-dairy creamer to smooth it and it worked great. Good luck to you.

Thanks JanH............... my kids love the bettercream I don't. For some reason I think it's feels like rubber when it dries out. Hahahahahaha....
