Hey Folks, I am a beginner, jumping in at the deep end but I need some help icon_redface.gif My Daughters 3rd birthday is coming up in a month and I had this grand idea of making her an Ice Age cake and I want to make the main characters to put on the cake and I need ideas on how it would be best to make them. I have no idea what I should use, they are going to be relatively small figures. Any tips and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There was a new thing on one of the other threads called "Frosting Dough"-----Stir 1/2 cup canned vanilla or white frosting and 1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar in medium bowl. Knead until a smooth dough forms, Wrap airtight in plastic wrap until ready to use. Store at room tempt. Makes 1 cup. I have not tried it yet, it was found in a womans day magazine. So maybe that will help, It shows pictures of moleded apples and stuff, guess you could mold it into anything you want. Let me know how it turns out for you, if you use it, and how it tastes. Hope this helps.

If you want to make figures out of icing; add alot of extra powdered sugar. I did this for a pool party cake; I made all of the people out of icing with extra sugar. you can see that in my photos. That was the first time I made people and they kept breaking because it was icing. I now use mmf or if you do not want to make it buy the wilton fondant since it's just going to be figures and probably not eaten. I've been adding gumtex to my fondant for figures to make it more stiff and dry faster.

If you're looking for the best way to make them, I'd consider using gumpaste instead. You can buy the ready to use gumpaste and not have to worry about recipes, or make it yourself. Either way, it's easy to use, and "tried-and-true". I've just started making figures myself and had no trouble working with the gumpaste. It's easy to tint different colours and works like Play-Doh.

I use a mixture of fondant and gumpaste on my figures. I too and pretty new to it all and jumped in on a cake back in June. It is fun and you'll have a great time doing it too. Make sure that if you are having them stand you have a way of keeping them upright before they dry. I messed this up with my Hannah montana cake in my pics and had to use skewers to brace the girl up. It worked but would have rather of done without them.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks everyone, looks like Gumpaste is the way to go. I have an idea in mind I just hope I can pull it off LOL The plan is to make a multi layer cake so its' nice and high then have Scrat with his acorn climbing the side and the other main characters (Manny, Diago and Syd) on top of the cake. I will be sure to post a pic of the finished product if I can make it work. I was thinking of using toothpics embedded in the feet to hold the figures in place.
