Hi All!

I buy my shortening from thebakerskitchen.net
They sold Sweetex in a 4 pound tub. However, they NO LONGER sell it anymore, they replaced it with something called TBK Hi Ratio?????
I have done a internet search to find Sweetex in these small tubs, but all I can find now is the big 50 pound box??? I do not need that large of a supply.

Has anyone used TBK Hi-Ratio? I found another source that sells CK Hi Ratio. I am sooooooooooooooooooooooo afraid to change my receipe to another brand????

Any help is appreciated...

I haven't tried TBK, but use Sugarshack's BC recipe and the CK brand gives a very good finished product. Don't you just hate it when they change stuff that works?!?

There was a post a while ago about Sweetex telling them to stop repackaging their product into smaller quantities and selling it and using the Sweetex name. I think it is the same thing, just a different name so they don't get into trouble.

I use Shugarshacks receipe all the time. In fact, I emailed her about this. This is how I found the CK Hi Ratio. However, she told me she uses Sweetex. I am assuming since she does so many beautiful cakes she buys the 50 pound box.

I am worried that changing the brand will change the way her amazing recipe comes out...

Mikel, you may want to price the 50# block...I get it from CK Products (in Norcross) and pay about $43. I know that a local cake decorating shop charges $10.99 for a 3# tub . You'll need a tax ID number and license, tho.

Where is this cake store you get the Sweetex for? 43.00 is a good price on the 50 pound box. I find it on-line for anywhere between 80.00-100.00.

I live west of Atlanta. About a 15 minute drive from 6 flags...

I spoke to the manager on the phone from thebakerskitchen about 1 month ago and he assured me that it is still "Sweetex" brand.


Recently Sweetex and Alpine both told them that if they repackaged their shortening into smaller tubs then they needed to put their own name on the tub...i.e. TBK (the baker's kitchen)

There is a phone number on their site if you'd like to call yourself they are VERY helpful.

Mike, I buy the 50 lb. block, break it into 2 1/2 lb. portions (which is what I use in my recipe), wrap it in plastic wrap, put it in a freezer bag, and freeze until I need it. Works beautifully. I can also buy it in the cooler months that way and still have what I need for the hot months.

I just got off the phone with thebakerskitchen.net

As dkelly has already explained to us, they told me as well that it was a copyright issue. The shortening is actually Sweetex, but they cannot use the name. She advised me that other website companies will start doing this shortley.

She ASSURED me that my receipe will not change. I will go ahead and buy the TBK brand and see if this is true or not....I will let you guys/gals know what happens.....

I just bought 8lbs of the TBK shorten total came out to 26.98. Shipping was $9.00 That wasn't to bad

I always buy my high ratio shortening from the Bakers kitchen (TBK brand) and also use Sharon's buttercream recipe with it........never had a problem with it!

Global Sugar Art sells a 12-lb. block of Sweetex for $35.99 plus shipping. I think it is repackaged, so maybe they will be forced to rename it as well. I like using that size. I go through enough to warrant a larger amount than a 4-lb. bucket, but 50 lbs. is far too much for me!

Thanks for all the info on this thread! I certainly did not know this. Since i converted to almost all SMBC, I don't use near the volume of shortening as I once did....but when I DO....love that sweetex!

Found a 1 pound block at ShopB Nook, but the shipping is pretty expensive. I'm new to this and just found out about Sharon's recipe.
Not sure what to do. I'm purchasing TBK's version for now.

I am in the minority here but I do not like hi ratio. To me it has such a heavy feel or taste. Not sure how to explain. When I made it it was so full of air. I used indydebi buttercream this weekend and it turned oout pretty good. Next time I am going to try wilton snow white.

Mikel I use the CK shortening with Sugarshack's recipe and it works great. There is actually a cake store called Kake Kompani in Hiram that I get it from. She has it for $8.99 3lb tub. I live in Marietta so thats not too far from me, but the lady who owns it orders all my stuff for me so I don't have to pay shipping from CK. She will get you anything you need just email her

Cakeconnection.com also sells it under the CK Brand: 3lb tub for 13.09 and ships anywhere..

Where would i find this buttercream recipe that everyone is talking about and also tbk shortening?
