Good Morning, I made a choc cake this morning...cake mix, plus 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup sour cream, 1 egg, 1 tsp of van. Well I made a mistake, the box calls for 1 1/4 cup water and 1/2 cup oil...well I added 1 cup oil before I figured out what I was doing..so I added 3/4 cup of water (the 1/4 cup & 1/2 cup) I baked it, it looks fine and baked up fine. The only thing I have to say for myself is it was 5:00 AM. icon_mad.gif

Does anyone have any idea of how it is going to taste? I do have time to bake another one...think I should?

I have learned my lesson, don't try to bake a cake before you go to work.

Thanks

I think it might be very heavy or oily, but am not sure. If it is for someone other than immediate family (i.e. paying customer), I would bake another one. Then you can try this one and let us know how it turned out. Better safe than sorry in my opinion.

I think it will be okay because most pound cake recipies I have call for 1 cup of oil. So, it is like you made a pound cake. It will be a heavier, denser cake but it will still taste good, it will not seem oily. I would not bake another one.

I did the same thing once. I'm so used to mixing 2 mixes at the same time, that I just automatically added 1 cup of oil for a single mix that only called for 1/2 cup. It turned out just fine.

I have to agree with CakesByEllen, If its just a cake for family I'd let it go..but if its for a paying customer ..I'd make another. I'm curious to know how it turns out though.. keep us informed. Seems like it would be a little heavy is all.

I have a friend who makes all of her cakes with this recipe....1 box of mix....4 eggs....1 cup of oil and then 1/2 cup water. She doesn't use the cup of flour or sour cream or vanilla...I think the cake will be okay...I don't think it would be oily...maybe just moister than usual. You could alway take the smallest of a plug out of one of the bottom layers and taste it for yourself....whoever gets that piece will just get a bonus of more icing or filling!!! Good luck!!!

I'm more concerned about the 1 egg. Just one? Did your cake rise okay? That must have been one heavy duty egg![/i]

DianeLM,

I am thinking that she meant one additional egg along with what the box of cake mix calls for, so probably 4 eggs total. Sounds like she just did the cake mix extender recipe which calls for one extra egg.
