I tried to use my pasta machine for fondant but it comes out all torn and lumpy looking instead of smooth. It's a new machine, only used once before for pasta, and totally clean. What am I doing wrong? I'm using Satin Ice fondant.

Thank you!

is fondant too soft?

did you dust with powdered sugar (rollers and fondant) so less possibility of sticking?

Make sure you dont have lumps of dry fondant in your fondant. They wont show as much until you pass it
through the roller and does exactly that. It shows lumps and the little stones will make holes in it..

What Tonedna already said, plus, if you try to put to much through at one time it will fold and crinkle on you too. I dust my piece of fondant or gumpaste lightly on both sides with a cornstarch and it never sticks. icon_smile.gif

Also don't try to go too thin all at once. Take it gradually down the thinnesses. If you shove a mass through the smallest setting, it'll tear and get lumpy like crazy.

While on this topic.. is there a brand of pasta roller that is particularly good or do they all work as good as eachother? I am looking to get one...I'm from the UK so would have to be available here! Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, What is a good machine, I purchased on from Michaels and I really dislike it but then I didn't pay much for it. Do they come in different sizes
And how about the area to roll the fondant through different widths ?

Live2create.....I bought my pasta machine at Bed Bath and Beyond for 69.00 and it has been a great investment for me! The brand is "Weston" and they have several different attachments you can purchase at later dates if you want to, even an electric motor can be put on it very easily. However, to date I have never needed anything other than what came in the box. Lots of decorators use this particular machine and it comes highly recommended.

If you have a kitchen aid mixer you can get one to fit it for about the same price as the as the Weston. Just do a google search.

Yep....I agree and also with the people who say make sure you either p/s or cornstarch it well.

I tried it several times before I finally got enough p/s on my gumpaste and went down in thickness gradually and it worked well. I p/s it between each level. I've been using one called "Imperia" that I borrowed from my sister, and it looks just like one at Michael's but I think they got it at a kitchen store.

AIt is old topic but maybe somebody can help me. I love my kitchen aid pasta maker but I did really messed it up with fondant. Since I can't immerse it in water how can I clean it without damaging it?

Use a wet towel and hold it on the underside of the rollers while on low speed.  Very important to only hold the towel on the underside or you will end up with a towel stuck in your pasta roller!

AAnd if it gets really stuck, there's a fair chance it will break and there's no fixing it then. If you only hold it underneath you'll be ok though. Also make sure you dust your fondant/gumpaste with enough powdered sugar or corn starch so it doesn't stick to the rollers or mess the finish on the fondant.

AGuys, thank you soooo much! I thought I will need to buy a new pasta roller attachment. Cleaning instructions saying no no to towels for cleaning, but I did fallow your advice anyway. I thought since I can't use pasta attachment anymore I should give a try. And it worked. Omg! I spend hours trying to clean and nothing worked. But using a wet paper towel it took me about 3-4 min. Now it is like new. Thanks a lot!!!!!

I have a question about this as well. I just used my KA pasta roller for fondant last night for the first time and my red Satin Ice went through just fine, but I had some Wilton Black and it went through terrible on the same setting. I finally gave up and just rolled it out. This was my first time using Wilton fondant as I usually make MMF or use Satin Ice, anyone else have this trouble with Wilton fondant or can give me any tips?  Thanks!
