No matter how much cornstarch or PS I use, I can't get fondant out of the tappit cutters. Gumpaste, however, works beautifully!! HTH

Yah, they don't work for me either, but I haven't tried gumpaste yet.

Gumpaste - rolled very thin, and allowed to dry a bit before cutting icon_wink.gif

Usually I use a pasta roller, but not always The fondant or gumpaste has to be incrediably thin - almost see thru. Then let it sit on the counter to dry out. Then cut and tap.

I just used mine today (and I have used them many times before). Every now and again, a letter sticks beyond my ability to save it, but most of the time, they come out OK. As mentioned by others, I roll my fondant REALLY thin - I don't have a pasta roller, so I do it myself. It has to be super thin. I also roll mine out on a thin layer of cornstarch (I usually roll out fondant on shortening when I use it to cover cakes) as cornstarch is less likely to cause sticking problems. I also do as mentioned and let the fondant sit for a few minutes after rolling out to allow it to dry a bit. Make sure you give the cutter a good whack on the counter too. Aine2 does a good tutorial on it, but I can't remember if it's on Youtube?? I think tonedna does one on Youtube, if memory serves. Good luck!

Tonedna has a YouTube video about how to use these particular tappits. I have the Funky Letter tappits and had the same problems you are having until I watched Edna's video. Now I have no problems with them at all. I have never used fondant on any of the tappits and only use gumpaste. Here is the link to Edna's video.

Editing to say that is Ain2's video link and she shows you how to use them as well. icon_biggrin.gif
I will try to find Edna's as well and will post it as soon as I do.

Madge - tappits is a brand name of cutter that you can buy in many shapes and letters/numbers. They are made in the UK and distributed by FMM (do a search on-line). You can get them at many sites in North America too, but I ordered mine from the UK.

I let the gumpaste dry as much as posible and then I rub a little shortening on my surface so that it sticks to the surface not the tappit. If a portion gets stuck I use a exacto knife to tease it out so that it doesnt get messed up.
I believe that Edna has a u-tube video on tappits...you might check that out as well.

So the secret, is letting it dry? I'm anxious to try again now because I was so excited when I finally got them in the mail, but then it was so hard getting the letters out -- always end up with toothpick marks on them. icon_biggrin.gif

And thats the reason they aren't working for you. Unless you add tylose to the fondant..plenty!... The first time I used the tappits I bang the hell out of them, used crisco, cornstarch, the works!..
Until I started using gumpaste or fondant with plenty of tylose, then it started working for me..

I purchased that cutter like 3 or 4 months ago so excited to use them and I couldn't get the fondant out of the cutter lol...it wasn't until I came and asked here and they said to use gumpaste lol. I got so angry with that cutter I threw it somewhere in a box and haven't touched it since.

I can get them out (after lots of practice and a few swear words) but my problem is that after I let them dry and then try to apply them to the cake, I always have a breakage. Some of the letters get SO narrow in places - drives me crazy! Anyone else find that happens? Maybe it's just the ones I bought. icon_confused.gif

I used fondant with mine the first time I used it (didn't read the directions cause, duh, I know what I am doing) and rolled it WAY to thick. My experience trying to get the fondant out of the cutter went something like this....."**whack whack** icon_mad.gif "You son of a......!" ***whack whack whack*** break icon_cry.gif . Watched Edna's video on Youtube...."ohhhhh" icon_surprised.gif "use gumpaste and roll thin". Now I love my Funky cutters. Thank you Edna thumbs_up.gif I think you saved everyone in my house from the whacking wrath of the Funky Cutter.

lthiele - the same thing happens to me. I guess it's to be expectied with such "fine" and thin lettering. I just make well more than I need and have back up. Although I have had all my back ups break on me too, and I had to stamp a new letter on the spot (not giving it time to dry), but that doesn't happen often.
