Wrapping Cake Dummy In Ribbon
Decorating By mamafrogcakes Updated 19 Aug 2009 , 9:28pm by venuscakes
I'm having a difficult time with something! I recently saw a cake online that was 4 tiers and between the bottom two tiers was a small 4" cake dummy used as a separator. I'm trying to recreate this idea. I'm TRYING to wrap satin (not wired) ribbon around a square cake dummy. After wrapping it one time, as I try to go up the dummy to continue wrapping, I'm getting a small gap each time I go up with the ribbon. I've tried pulling it tighter and it's still not working!?! I hope I'm describing this well and I'm REALLY hoping someone can help!! Any suggestions??
Thanks!
Florist satin ribbon works much better than regular satin ribbon. It is the kind that will tear lenghtwise quite easily. I buy mine from a wholesaler but you can also get it at Michaels. It also comes in different widths.
This type of ribbon does not loosen up and can be glued or I just use a straight pin on the inside and a decorative hat pin (or more than one) on the outside that push into the styofoam.
The pins look like buttons and they can be used on the front or back of the cake.
When I wrapped a dummy for the same reason, I wrapped the lower half, cut off the ribbon and secured it, then wrapped a second piece of ribbon o the upper half. Agree the pins look really nice on this, too!

It's practically impossible to wrap a dummy in one continuous length of ribbon, progressing up as you move around the cake. I apply it in individual pieces. And pearl headed or clear glass pins always look elegant if you do it right. And trim and melt and fraying that occurs. Very classy!
I agree with Jamie, I always wrap one length around the dummy using double side tape and then the next length and so on.
I think it looks really good.
The other option which I have also done is to buy a small amount of fabric. Then I neaten the edges so that the fabric is the same depth as the dummy and attach that with double sided tape.
