I use this recipe, which is a glace:
3 cups powdered sugar, sifted
3 tablespoons skim milk (or other type milk, or water)
3 tablespoons corn syrup
15 drops brite white food color, optional (I use Americolor brand)
In a medium size bowl, mix together the powdered sugar, milk and corn syrup until fully combined (I just use a spoon to do the mixing). Add the brite white and mix well. You will want the icing to be the consistency of white school glue, or maybe a bit thicker. To thicken the icing, add more powdered sugar in small amounts. To thin, add more corn syrup in small amounts. Divide and color. The icing will stay fresh in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 weeks. The decorated cookies do not need to be refrigerated, and if you omit the brite white, it is definitely not recommended.
The brite white seems to help prevent the icing from getting cloudy and spotting, especially if it gets cold. Also, the high sugar content keeps the icing from spoiling, so that's why you can use the milk and not have to worry about refrigeration.
