I have the cake part down, no prob! What concerns me is the HUGE antlers I am going to be making. I figured I would do wire covered in fondant, but I am not sure. My other worry is how to secure it to the rice crispies in the head of the deer. Should I run wire down through the head/rice crispies? How big/thick should my wire be so I know it wont bend under all the weight from the fondant?

well, here's a use for those wire coat hangers we're not supposed to use for clothes or so the experts tell us.

floral wire doubled (smaller lighter parts) or tripled up (heavy, large parts) and twisted like a rope will work.

for the flat section (antlers parallel to board) I would consider using wood and have an internal wood support screwed to the board)

There are instructions for a deer head mounting like the one pictured. The instructions were in one of the cake magazines. The lady that did the step by step instructions used wire covered in foil paper. She then wrapped them in masking tape (if I remember right). Then painted over this in royal icing.
I have the instructions that were sent to me in e-mails (5). If you would like a copy of them PM me your e-mail address and I will forward them to you. They are complete with pictures.

When I made the deer in my photos I used floral wire. As Doug said you may want to use hangers since this is much larger. I then covered the wire with gum paste and textred it by sticking skewers intot the paste and pulling it down just slightly and scratching lines randomly into it. Get creative when deciding what to use for the scratches etc. Once dried I went over them with non toxic chalks untill I has what I felt was a pretty realistic looking set of antlers. Dont try to get them perfect or they will look really odd. Once you have the antlers you can anchor them into the cake or the board. Remeber, antlers bell out slightly where they meet the head. Cant wait to see your cake!

If I were making that I would make an armature from wire hangers as Doug suggested, and I would use modeling chocolate for the horns. Modeling chocolate can be worked as long as you need to without drying and cracking. I think trying to do something like that with gumpaste is asking for trouble because they are so big it would be drying on you while you were still working.

Yes, I would also use what doug suggested. You can also use modeling chocolate.

AI did mine with hangers covered in tinfoil then modeling chocolate. It worked really well, but getting the foil smooth enough is very time consuming, so you can coat it with really think layers of chocolate, and forgo the foil, just make sure you use some marshmellows fluff to bind the chocolate to the hangers or it will melt off...especially if ur in the south:)

Hi I know this is a long shot but I started making cakes just over 6 months ago and have just been asked for a 3d deer head with antlers, the lady is aware that I am a novice and still wants me to have a go, do you still have the instructions? If so please would I be able to get a copy.  I am mainly concerned as to how the antlers go in the cake so they will stay upright, many thanks. Kim
