What do you roll your fondant on? I am looking for the right type of material to roll my fondant on besides the flimsy mats. I need something that can be stored easily as I decorate out of my home and don't have much space. Thanks!!

I just use my countertop. I grease the counter top and roll it out right there!! Nothing slides around on me and it's pretty easy to clean up. P.s. Your counter has to be very smooth.

I have a really nice alteco mat, it cost around $40

before I bought my mat , I used a sheet of vinyl

For large projects I use my kitchen table covered with a large sheet of vinyl purchased from the fabric store. I keep the vinyl rolled up when not in use so there are no folds in it.

I use a piece of vinyl I bought from the fabric department at Wal-Mart. I roll it up when I don't use it. I think it only cost me about $1.49 for the full yard.

When you use vinyl do you also have to use shortening or cornstarch? Or can you roll directly on it?

I roll mine on a granite countertop with a bit of crisco.

I use a quilting 'board' for lack of another name, one side is plain the other has ruled markings on it making it easy to estimate size I need to roll out. Maybe a 36" or so square. I found it in the quilting area at Walmart next to the self healing mats. A little dusting of cornstarch and nothing ever sticks! I can easily use this for most sizes of my cakes, but for really large roll out pieces, I like to switch to the vinyl so I can turn it over on the cake with the vinyl.
For small pieces for cut outs etc, I use the plastic cutting boards from the $$$ store, 2 to a package for $1.00. Will also leave cutouts on them to airbrush, then pop into the dishwasher to clean up. I have 6 or so of these and can cutout and leave till I'm ready to use.

I roll out fondant on parchment paper. I also have a sheet of vinyl but I got tired of cleaning it, it's so big it's awkward to clean, so now I use the parchment and throw it away when I'm done. If I need a big piece I tape two together.

I used to do it on my granite counter but not, I just lay an Ateco mat on the counter and roll. I don't life the mat though, I just use my hands.

I also have tile counters So I asked me husband to cut me a new piece of laminate flooring that fits exactly on my countertop, then I use the plastic I purchased at Wal Mart. When I am not useing my pleice of laminate I store it behind a dresser that I use for storage.

I also use a "quilting" boad. I love all the measurements on the one side. Makes it easy when cutting things out. Mine is big enough to roll fondant for large tiers of wedding cakes and also has a handle. Makes it very easy to use.

I use a big blue Ateco mat. I like it a lot except, I'm always cutting into it leaving holes. I need a new one already.

I have tile counters also. I use a drafting table to roll my fondant out (and do pretty much everything else cake related). It has a smooth surface, so I don't use anything on top of it except some cornstarch.

I am new with fondant so I am looking for something to use myself to roll fondant out.  I have a small kitchen and also kitchen table with tile.  Small countertops.  Can I use a quilting board as many of you have mentioned on my tile kitchen table?  Will I need to get something to put on it or is it smooth alreadyand sturdy enough to roll out fondant on it?  Thanks for all the input I have read already.
