Hi all, ok, so todays bride just cancelled, 2 hours before delivery... So, what do I do with the cake now? Should I deliver it anyway just incase it's a heat of the moment kinda thing or should I donate it or something??? What do you guys do?

I hope it is paid!

Call her back and ask what you should do. They might want all or part of it anyway, or they might direct you to deliver it to a shelter.

since they paid for the cake (hopefully), it is still there cake. so i would ask them what to do with it.
if they leave it up to you, then i would be thinking advertising/ charity. give it to a shelter, to your church, to your dentists etc etc.

She needs to tell you what to do with it, whether you donate it to a shelter and give her the receipt or whatever. It's hers to dispose of since she paid for it.

Wow..2 hours before..that is a new one to me...but everyone is right...She needs to decide what to do with it since it is paid for.I would call her again and reconfirm that the wedding is totally off and what you should do with it!

i would be very careful of disposing of the cake, without the brides actual ok. true, she maybe doesnt give a toss. but that might change in a day or two, when the cake is presumably still edible.
its tricky one for you!

I wouldnt get rid of the cake just yet.
unstack it and store it in the fridge for a couple of days.
Tomorrow she might want to have a 'good riddance' party or something and if the cake she paid for isnt available you will be up a creek

I agree, I would hold on to it a couple of days..maybe call her maid of honor or mom or something and ask if they would ike it for all the out of town guests, etc.

I agree also, I would wait a couple of days or call the bride's mother. If it's all paid for it's theirs. It's their call for what to do with it not yours. Never know, they might just kiss and make up. icon_smile.gif

The cake is beatiful.

You should not feel terrible because you did the right thing. You are supposed to call and ask what to do with the cake because they paid for it. If I were you, I will have to keep the cake and call them later on.

Yeah, it's a great cake; it's a shame about the cancellation. Considering what's going on, I might pop that thing in the freezer. You never know. And if you don't hear from them in a week, maybe call MOB and get her approval to donate it at that time, after everyone's had a chance to calm down. I think that's what I'd do.
Good luck with the situation! icon_smile.gif

Goodness, that's awful. Hopefully the bride can find peace and the cake can find a home.

BTW, I just have to share a story about another wedding that wasn't! I'm a pianist by profession and a caker by hobby. Several years ago I was hired to perform at a wedding reception at a very upscale winery. When I got to the venue, the event manager pulled me aside and told me--in no uncertain terms--that I was NOT to play any happy music, no love songs, no wedding songs, nothing like that. It seems the groom got stood up at the altar! However, he wanted to go on with the reception because it had all been paid for and he didn't want to see it all go to waste.

About fifteen minutes before the end of the party, the non-bride showed up. She was in her wedding attire, completely disheveled, and more than three sheets to the wind, shall we say. She kept throwing herself on the groom. He kept trying to hide. It was so sad and I felt like one of those people who shouldn't look at a disaster but couldn't help it.

During that time, one of the staff came up and whispered, "N, I'll give you twenty bucks if you play '100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall!' " I told her that wasn't necessary but to wait til all the guests have gone, then I'd play my alternate set list to go with the occasion. At the right time, I did play that list and the staff was on the floor in hysterics! The list was:

Tequila Sunrise
Lush Life
Scotch and Soda
Days of Wine and Roses
Margaritaville
. . . etc.

I often wonder what happened to them.

That was one great list PianoDiva! I was laughing at your selection so I can just imagine the staff on the floor in hysterics! icon_lol.gif

Update..

Also another bit of the story came out...

8:18 am bride calls me to cancel-
10 am abouts I called bride to ask what she wanted me to do with it, donate, deliver to moms etc. she says I dunno..
11 am - venue director calls me - "Hi, this is Tammy from "insert venue here" we were expecting your cake delivery 1/2 an hour ago and we're starting to get nervous!"

So I explained what had happened and turns out that the bride hadn't told the venue yet! The woman from the venue said she had been scrambling to decorate the room because the decorater and the florist hadn't show up either and that it all made sense now.. Then she giggled and asked me for the brides contact info! I wasn't sure if I'm allowed to give it to her so I refused, I don't want to piss off bride anymore than she is already having a bad day, but then director lady says, oh I have it here, and said she would call bride..

I've heard nothing since... It's quite possile she just wasn't able to get ahold of anyone at the venue because when I called to arrange a delivery time it took two days for someone to call me back. They're very busy...

Ok, so, I decided to freeze the whole cake, minus flowers, and in a few days when I contact the bride again, she might have a better idea of what to do with it.. I don't want to eat it or toss it for fear in a few days she might call me and say where's my cake...

Thanks for all your help and advice!!

I am glad that you are able to hold onto the cake for her until the dust settles. Poor girl.

Is there a way to contact her mom? Perhaps they have out-of-town company to feed. Who knows... this young lady might now want to have sweets around. (Even though a wedding cake might reopen the wound, could it be taken apart to lose the reception appearance?)

Does she realize the cake is still available?

Depending on what happened, she might wnat the cake to throw at her non-husband's head.
WOuld be a shame for that gorgeous cake, but she might feel better afterwards.

Unless I recieve notification in writing (letter or email from the clients own email account) so I can document the changes, I deliver all cakes as scheduled. If they don't need the cake anymore, they can do whatever they choose with it. If they call me (last minute or not), I tell them to get it to me in writing documenting the cancelation - even if it's just a text message that I can save on my phone. It's too easy for a client to go back & say they never cancelled the order or made any changes. Especially in such a last minute case as you explained. A bride could easily call the wedding back on 5 minutes later & forget to let you know. When the cake doesn't show up as planned on their contract & there is nothing in writing to document the changes, you've got a problem.
